hi guys, Sunshine here...... Oh I do wish I see sunshine......kidding kidding....
I just have a question or should I say concern? I have some pain on my AN side. I have noticed that everytime I sleep on my left (AN side) I always have the pain the next day. Is anyone ever experienced this? Doctor said it's okay or no problem sleeping on AN side. But right now stilll feels tender and like I said painful like a pressure pain.
thanks in advance guys.

Hi Sunshine!
What type of pain? My an side is still tender. I can now lay a bit on that side but not for any real length of time. I have to prop my hands under my chin to keep my head off the sore spot.
-
I don't know how to explain it, but it's like when a wound is healing and it hurts? Sorry, I wish I could explain this better.ÂÂ
The last couple of nights I've been sleeping on my AN side. And I feel like there's a bump on my AN side and left side still feels tender.... *Shrug* when I lay on it, it doesn't hurts. I will try NOT to sleep on it much anymore...... If not I will call my doctor to see if it's normal. It's not a continous pain, but enough to bother and worry me. Anyways, I'll be in L.A @ HEC in a couple of weeks for a follow up check up.....ÂÂ

I have just started laying some on my an side as it bothered me. I felt lopsided, and it was too tender. I was told to just start doing it but it didn't feel right and figured I wasn't going to just do something that bothered or hurt me. The back quadrant of my head is still tender so have to lay more to the front if I lay on that side.

Hello all.  I had pain both internal and external and still have some two years after. I think your nerves and with the hole in you head when the skin slides around it bothers the nerves. I too had pain when I started sleeping on MY an Side and even today don't stay on that side very long. As far as internal pain I think you will have that for awhile, Pain reminds me of cluster headache Pain kind of moves or jumps around, sometimes it's like I can feel it under the skin moving across my head. IMO this operation is a life altering experience and MY motto is a day without a Headache is "A GREAT DAY".  ;) ;) Hang in there IMO you going to expericence some weird pains for awhile! I think I remember our tumor size being about the same size, so probably you will endure similar pains, symstoms, and problems I have encountered. :-\ "Hopefully NOT" Cause I don't want to see anybody have pain after this operation!!!
-
thank you guys....... Right now, I don't have the pain. It comes and goes. You know that is something I need to ask my surgeons, if I do have a hole on my head? I guess I was too weak to asked before. But I will make sure all my questions are answered when I go to L.A.
Sometimes I wish I live w/ my doctors or they are related to me...ha ha ha....So any concerns they can just check my head....... Too bad L.A is almost 4 hours drive from home..... Oh well.
thanks again....... I should change my name to Ms. Paranoia.... :)

Hi Sunshine,
I still have pain and tenderness on my An side. It really gets worse when I am tired?! I am in therapy for a previous neck/back injury and the therapist says we need to work on the incision. She says I need to massage the area and keep messing with it. When she gets a hold of it she is really rough.
I have pressure on the back of my head that is accompanied by nausea at times. I do not know if it is coming from the surgery or the injury and it really bothers me. Does anyone else feel pressure on the back of their head right above the neckline? I had the translab approach so I lost my balance and hearing nerve so I get really dizzy sometimes.
I think IMO is for in my opinion.
Take care,
Lynn

Sunshine,
I don't rest my head on the AN side either, it seems to generate a dull pain. And my taste in pillows changed after An surgery. I used to like firm feather pillows. Now I prefer softer pillows, and have gone through three different ones trying to find the right one ;)
I think we probably favoring the AN side. And may be causing some stiff muscles trying ti keep from laying on the AN side too much. Maybe massage would help.
Regards,
Rob

Massage huh?
When I was still in Physical and Occupational Therapy, my OT suggested to me, to have some kind of stress massage? She said it will help w/ all the trauma I gone through. I wish I remember what it's called. Anyways, I asked my doctor about it; more for his approvement. And he said not to do it.
I didn't asked about massaging my AN side though. That's definitely one of the questions I need to ask him when I go see him on May 16th.
One thing I know for sure, he told me not to go to a Chiropractor for back or neck adjustments.
So far today, no pain on my AN side. I didn't sleep on that side at all last night. So, I think I just discovered the reason of the pain I had.
-
Sunshine my best gf is a chiropractor and she won't even touch me right now. So judging from what she's said and her actions I'd say no to the chiro too! She's never in 5 years plus refused to adjust me for my headaches until post surgery. She has done muscle stim and heat therapy and an activator adjustment on my jaw due to my tmj acting up.
During massage they losen up toxins in your body..wonder if that is why he said no? I have a friend who got injured at work. Fell and wrenched his back and had a massage due to hurting and almost died from the toxins being released in his body. I know he was in a mess. I've only had my neck massaged to release the tense muscles since surgery...hmmm...
-
My ot used to do deep tissue massage on my neck and shoulders. That was the best part of my recovery! Since surgery I've been to a massage therapist once for my neck and shoulders and once for all over body. I didn't care for the body but the neck and shoulders was divine!!!
I too have pain if I lay on the AN side, sometimes. I'm 22 months post op. I figure any feeling is better than none I just hope one day I'm sort of normal again....

Sunshine, I too have pain when I sleep on my AN side.(right side) I also have some bleeding from the BAHA site.
I found the perfect pillow at Sears. This has helped some but mostly I sleep on the left side.

Hey sunshine, my sunshine! :)
Funny, I get "pressure" on my AN side, which is the side I sleep on.... I have purchased "memory foam" pillows that form to my funky head shape but seems to be helping... IMO *giggles*, a thought if you don't already have?

I like my memory foam pillow..provides neck support too!
-
is it really good? I have just the regular. I should get one for me....thanks PPearl & Battyprincess...!
-
Myla I have disc problems in my neck which why I got it originally. I took it to the hospital with me which helped considerably as it supports your neck which as we all know after surgery can really be aggravated. Mine is the one that says it's suppose to keep you from snoring. It has the dip in the middle. I have a regular one too which is still comfortable and soft but does not have as much neck support. I know here you can catch them on sale for half off at Belk's. I'm not sure who else carries them but know other stores do just haven't paid attention since I got mine.
-
I too have a memory pillow and a mattress topper. Did I mention I hate to get out of bed in the morning!!! luv2teach
p.s. What am I doing wrong, I can't seem to get the little faces to print anymore??
-
Sunshine,
For several months after my surgery I could not sleep or lay on the left side of my face because it didn't even feel like it was my own. Now I can. Still not perfect but much, much better. I think these are problems that just take a long time to go away. Give it some more time. My surgery was Sept 21, 2005.

hi Paul,
you're 2 months ahead of me.

Regarding AN side neck pain. After my surgeries I found it impossible to sleep in our bed.
After a couple of hours at most I'd be back in my recliner due to the pain. This went on for most of the past 8 years. We recently purchased a new mattress set, on the firmer side and much to my surprise I've haven't experienced the pain that I had before, I am to sleep the whole night thru comfortably without the neck pain.
It might be worth checking out your mattress. It might not be giving you the support you need.
Best to all
Chet

Hi, sunshine,
I don't have any pain when i sleep on my left side, AN side, but i do end up with a small headache. it does feel wierd when i lay on my left side, so I just don't do it, at least not consciously.

I'd have to agree with everyone! I used to sleep only on my right side (an side) but after surgery I couldn't. Did the recliner thing for awhile but then got used to laying on the left side but found that I couldn't lay and watch tv or talk to anyone because I couldn't freakin hear anything! Anyway, that not hearing when sleeping on your ear can be good and bad. I don't hear anything so I don't wake easily but I also many times have missed my alarm making the mornings with kids and school and me going to work a mad rush! Now the puppy usually wakes me by 5:00 but I still try and set my alarm. I did finally come to terms with sleeping on the an side but it doesn't feel the same and I can't stay that way for long. So after all my life of sleeping on that side, I've had to change my sleeping side which was weird at first, but now I just snuggle in and enjoy some silence (tinnitus is less when there is less noise around). I also have a memory foam pillow, it's a nova form or something like that and it's the best! Good luck everyone to all the adjustments but you will finally come to terms, but it takes time and from what I've found, is forever changing!

Hi Static,
I noticed that it's been a little over two years since you had the surgery. Is your recovery came pretty easy for you? You now taking care of kids and working? All that pressure? Wow. I hope I can do that also.
-
Hi Myla!
Hope your pain problem is improving. I have trouble with chronic pain on my operated side as well. I've had 4 cranial surgeries and am also trying to figure out why I have this pain problem. The differential diagnosis keeps changing. Seems my physicians are running out of gas and pushing me towards accepting the post op sequelae and steering me to towards "moving on." This may be the right thing to do but first I'm off to get a second opinon. Frankly I'm worried about having a BAHA abutement implanted while I continue to deal with pain in the mastoid area.
At any rate, in regards to sleeping on the affected side. I too like using a memory foam pillow. Also, sometimes I elevate my torso about 30 degrees when I sleep on my right side. Less pressure it seems. For me, tenderness around the surgical site while sleeping proved to be a symptom of an insidiuos serious complication. After my experience, I'm committed (not neurotic) more than ever to listening to what my body is saying even when really great doctors aren't catching on. In other words, I do not second guess myself.
-
good for you terracotta. It's always the best move to get a second opinion.
the pain on my AN side is going away, I tried not to sleep on my AN side, haven't got the chance to get a memory foam pillow for me :-) ... but now, I'm dealing w/ headaches to only half of my head w/c you would guess, my AN side (Left). It was so painful that I cried and it helps and still dealilng w/ earache on my good ear, throat hurts, AN side eye is irritated, fatigue,....never ending.... and having to deal w/ the SSD process...grrrrrrrrr have to meet w/ a mental health doctor next week required by SSD.
I just hope I won't be too sick to go...
