Title: follow up from ANA surgery 12/15/10 at House Ear Clinic
Post by: miriamgail on December 20, 2010, 08:00:12 am
Dear all,
Thank you for your support during my decision process for treatment. i am very happy to report that my middle fossa surgery on 12/15 with Dr. Fayad and Dr. Schwartz at HEI went amazingly well. My vertigo is gone (was my chief presenting problem) and my bilateral hearing was preserved. I do not have facial nerve paralysis. So i feel very lucky. My surgeons were just excellent, could not have asked for any better. My one remaining annoying (but relatively trivial) side effect is the metallic taste in my mouth and inability to enjoy food that I used to like. Seems a small price to pay. Any advice?

Miriam

Hi, glad to hear that your surgery went great, and the outcome was wonderful. I can tell you after my surgery, I really couldnt' "Taste" that well for about 4 weeks. I didnt' have the metalic taste that you describe, but did have strange taste when I ate. I dont' think its' all that strange, and will return in time. Quick recovery to you, and have a great Christmas!

Great news, Miriam!  I'd be happy with those results too!   ;D

The metallic taste does eventually go away and food will start to taste like food again.  Unfortunately, it requires a bit of patience, and in my case, a lot of salt and hot sauce!   ;)

Miriam ~

Congratulations on your very successful AN surgery!  I agree with the previous posters that, in most cases, the 'metallic' taste eventually subsides.  Unfortunately, no one can say exactly when that will happen.

Wonderful news Miriam!  As stated above the odd taste will eventually subside.  I think it took about 6 weeks for my taste to return to normal.

Now THAT's what we like to read! Just about perfect recovery!
Please take it easy though. You had brain surgery, and need to rest, rest, walk, walk,  you probably know the routine!

Yeah, five days after a major brain surgery and that's the only real issue you are having, metallic taste? THAT'S AWESOME! But...don't go start thinking you can restart life at the same pace you are used to, it will take time, and if you rush it, you will slip back. I think all of us on here has seen that one at one point or another! Take care and let us know how you are doing and congrats on a very successful surgery!!

Thank you all for your replies and encouragement.
Spoke a little too soon in the relief and euphoria of my surgery being over -have fatigue, trouble sleeping, and also having left sided facial weakness which is clumsy and uncomfortable. Surgeons said could take few months to resolve. Other people's experiences?

Thank you again.

Hang in there, you are still in the early stages of recovery.

My fatigue lasted for months.

Things will get better in time.  You've just been through major (brain) surgery.

Miriam .....

You are doing amazingly well.  As Jan said the fatigue is a common thing we all share, as well as the trouble sleeping ..... but it does get better!  Do not push it ..... listen to your body and rest when needed, even five minutes helps.  I found setting an alarm when I napped during the day ..... limiting naps to no more than 30 minutes ..... helped my nighttime rest.
