Hi, I was diagnoised with a 2cm AN in left ear in September 2010 and finally got to see the specialist in February 2011 . He has made the decision to operate, which will be taking place APRIL/MAY this year. My symptom are feeling drunk must of the time, walking into walls when I get up at night, crackling in my left ear no all the time, but hearing is fine, he has said that he won't be able to save me hearing, which came as a bit of a shock.
The question I have is; Certain times of the month when I am hormonal my dizziness gets so much worse to the point when I can't read the paper without feeling sick. Is this just me or does anyone else have this.
I am from the UK and having my op in London, just wish it would come round a bit quicker so i can get on with it, spent too long waiting with this thing.

Hi Julie and welcome. BTW, my spouse is from England (my inlaws still in Dorset, met my spouse while he was living in SE London :) Yes, married me a cheeky bloke, as he is known on these forums). Many AN'ers here from the UK as well.
There has been talk over the years about how estrogen plays a role in AN's. Here is a sampling of a study noted by the US National Library of Medicine/National Institute of Health, noting an abstract published in 1990 for estrogen/progesterone binding with AN tissues:

Some more info noted on the web, as well as these discussion forums.... but this is a decent start. So, what you may be experiencing may (and I use the word loosely) have direct affect or not..... certainly not a doctor yet I've learned "never to say never".

Hmmm . . . I've not noticed a relationship between all my wonkiness and cycles (I have symptoms very similar to yours). However, I'm also edging closer to the "change," so I probably don't have as much hormone action going on either.

Hi and Welcome Julie,
I'm almost 5 years post op but can definitely see a difference in the hormonal cycle and my dysequilibrium which gets worse. Also the weather pattern changes make it worse. Hopefully your symptoms will go away for the most part after surgery.

omg......if it is dark I might as well sit and crawl cause I have no equilibrium without my sight. When the vestibular nerve goes we need other senses to keep us in balance.

Hello Julie and welcome to our AN family! My balance is always off but seems to be much worse at night...especially in the dark! I suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome since my AN surgery but I have noticed just before and during my cycle...I'm even more tired than usual. Please keep us posted on how you are doing.

I very much believe there is a relationship. I'm almost done with this business, but not quite. I recently had a "bad spell" with wonkiness etc, and I believe it was estrogen dominance related. I did read that if a person has middle ear or inner ear problems, damage, etc that estrogen fluctuations can make matters worse.
