Title: What are the odds?
Post by: Mark241 on April 21, 2011, 11:26:22 am
Thought I would share this story.

3 weeks ago, I noticed my retiered Police dog "Uno", a 14 yr old Sheppard, laying in my yard, with one of females barking over him and licking his head. Uno had vomitted, his eyes were rolling, very disorientated, none alert, and could get up on his own. My first thought was that he had a stroke, and this was the end. I called my Vet, with the very difficult decision to put him down. With a heavy heart and many tears, I put his old badge on him, lifted him into my unit, and took him to my Vet. He took one look at him and said lets' give this a week, and see if he improves. He said he believes that what my dog had is called "Canine Vestibular Syndrome" which is an inflammation of the Vestibular nerve. I had to administer IV's to Uno for three days, and on the fourth day, he started to stand on his own, and his eye rolling subsided. He now is alert, still  act's like his a pup again, of course that only lasts a short while, then takes a nap. His head is slightly tilted, and still, or will always have some balance issues. Of course now that's' he's well, I can reflect and see the humor that  both of us can catch each other when we stumble, Ha Ha, life's a trip!

Mark ~

Thanks for the fascinating account of your dog suffering from what seems to be the canine version of an acoustic neuroma ("Canine Vestibular Syndrome")  I'm so glad Uno was able to be saved, thanks to an alert and knowledgeable veterinarian.  I know you'll treat him well as he continues to recover.  Don't let him drive for awhile.   ;)

Odds are very, very small I'm guessing.

Although this is the second dog story like this on the Forum.  Dr. Sam (aka Sam Rush) had a dog with an AN.

Now you've got me wondering what my cats may come down with  :o

Mark,

I guess Uno wants to be just like you!   :D

People may think you AND the dog were drinking when they see you walking down the street!

Seriously, I'm glad Uno is okay.  One of my dogs is part shepherd - they are such smart and loyal dogs.  Well, mine didn't seem to inherit the "smart gene", but she is very loyal and looks a lot like a German Shepherd.   ;)

I don't know. You hear all the time about pets and owners looking more like each other over time. Why not medical conditions as well?

My dog took it to extreme, though. I had hemifacial spasm. She is epileptic - spasms all over.

You guys should write a book about animals and their owners ...... how wonderfully weird.

The odds must be very small, and to have two men and their dogs on here with that, just amazes me.

I have often believed that pets' can take some on some of the pain and symptom's of their owners', Uno was just a few years late with taking on mine ha ha.

Thanks for sharing this story, although I really hate reading about bad things happening to dogs and children. (those are the books and movies I shy away from.)

I hope your friend Uno is with you a good long time.
