« on: November 03, 2006, 02:02:32 pm »
I'm 38 and was just diagnosed with 1.4cm AN my ENT referred me to a Dr in San Diego that is a specialist because I have Kaiser
I have to stay within the network.  Anyone have any experience with this?  I definately want the surgery to remove it.
It seems to be a rapid growing tumor.  I first had ringing 2 months ago and within the 2 months have lost almost
all my hearing in my left ear. Kayla

Hi Kayla,
My brother had surgery at Kaiser in San Diego. His his Doctors were Dr. Cueva (neurotologist)  and Mastrodimas (neurosurgeon). He liked them and thought that they did a good job. However, he wasn't too happy with the nursing staff. They seemed to be pretty short-handed. He left the hospital before a PT person was able to see him. He has since had his other tumor removed (we have NF2) by House doctors (Brackmann and Hitselberger) at a Kaiser hospital in LA. Please let me know if I can answer any other questions.

Hi Jeff,

Can you give me any help with how your brother got Kaiser to agree to have a doctor from the House Ear Clinic do the surgery?  That is what I want for my son, but not sure how to get Kaiser to agree to it.

Thanks,
Darlene

Having once been a Kaiser member and being very familiar with their model I think it would be extremely difficult to have surgery approved outside the network when they feel they have competent surgeons who can address it in house. Until recently they use to approve radiosurgery being done at other hospitals such as CK at Stanford, because they didn't even have a radiosurgery capability within the system. They do have CK now, so they will require it done at a Kaiser facility I'm sure. Unless you can prove that Kaiser doesn't have the absolutely necessary technology or surgeons with the required skill, I think it will tough to get approval to be treated at HEI or anywhere else
