Help with Pre OP Questions for my Neuro Surgeon
« on: March 16, 2011, 06:52:22 pm »
Hello my friends!

I have my pre-op with my Neuro Surgeon April 14th. I am starting to put some thought into the questions I should ask.

Please help with questions you were glad you asked or wished you asked. Your input is very much appreciated.

I do not and was not asked to schedule a pre-op with my Neurotoligist, should I?

Scheduled for Retrosigmoid surgery.
Thanks!!!!
Diagnosed Dec 21, 2010, 1.75 x 1.75cm plan is for retrosigmoid removal scheduled for June 15th at MGH by Dr Barker & Dr Lee. Putting off so I may enjoy my sons senior year varsity hockey, lacrosse seasons and graduation. That and our annual trip to Cancun in May.

Hi Bill
A few questions I'd have asked would have been:

How many of these have you done?
Do you use the same approach for each surgery?
In your opinion is this the best course of treatment to undergo for me?
In your opinion do you recommend that I have a hearing test?
Can I get your home and cell numbers in case I have more questions  :D In case the answer is 'no' to this one I would ask - who can I talk to if I have more questions?

All the best on the 14th mate.

Bill .....

Before my retrosigmoid surgery, I had pre-op tests the day before ..... including a consultation with the anesthesiologist.  Many of my questions were answered then, plus the sheet of written information I was given.

Many questions cannot be answered beforehand because there are many variables that can occur that even the neurosurgeon does not know until he gets in there .....  actual size of tumor, whether it is a sticky tumor, whether it is stuck on other nerves, etc.   If you have a normal, uneventful surgery and recovery, some questions that come to mind are:

In a normal circumstance .....

1) how long would you expect my hospital stay to be?
2) how long will I be in the ICU?
3) can my family be with me?
4) who will do any follow-up care needed?

Beyond that, you may have questions specific to your particular situation.  I had many questions for the anesthesiologist about nausea and vomiting fears (that I had experienced with previous surgeries).  The anesthesiologist was very reassuring and indeed, I had no nausea or vomiting.  I wish I had asked the hospital about the diet I would be given.  (At first it was liquid, of course, but the bland diet for 3 days following that were awful.  My normal diet is lots of whole grains, vegetables, and fruit.)  When I finally could not look at another piece of white bread, they sent a hospital dietician up to me, who quickly amended my diet and all was well.  Isn't it always the little things in life ..... ?  ::) :o ::)

If you have specific questions, ask them here and somebody will tell you their experience as to whether or not you should ask it.

Good luck Bill on your Journey.  I to had Dr. Barker & found him very informative.  He had answers to questions I didn't think to ask.  I agree with Clarice's answere to your question.  Each of us is different so we need to personalize some of our questions to our specific needs.

Bill,

One discovery for me during this trip has been to involve another person who is close to you in the questions to present.  Many times they have concerns that you don't think of or may not consider to be important.  I am divorced and fortunately for me my sister who lives 5 hours away and has a family and career has taken a considerable amount of time out of her life to take care of her little brother.  She has provided great insight into several of my consultations.

Retrosig was much easier than translab.  Make sure they can address the entire tumor from that procedure.  Third surgeries are no fun!

Best of luck!

Hi Bill,

I read your small print at the bottom of your post ..... glad you've decided to put off surgery a bit and enjoy the really special things that fulfill your life.  I believe just by doing that, you'll be able to face your June surgery more relaxed.

Keep smiling .... and root hard!

My advice is to be sure they explain everything they are going to do step by step. My husband was fortunate to have a wonderful doctor that sat with us for a LONG time to explain EVERTHING. He was not in any hurry and it was clear tht he had my husband's best interest at heart. He also made sure that we understood that when we got home and had ANY questions, to feel free to call and ask and someone would call us back.

There is alot of obsorb and different options to choose...it's not an easy decision. Tom chose the translab surgery where they remove the entire tumor and leave no hearing left. We chose this route because we wanted to have the tumor out, and also because of the fact that he had little hearing left in that ear anyway. If he had better hearing, we may have chosen a different route.

It's unique to your situation on which plan you will choose. No one else is just like you.... it needs to be your decision. Barb
Husband with AN 2.1 x 1.2 cm right ear. Had translab surgery 2/9/11. Recovering nicely. No facial nerve damage.

Hi Boston Bill!  :)

I am scheduled for my pre-op with Dr Barker on 4/21.  When I first met with him for my consultation after I was diagnosed with AN I asked many questions such as:

How long my surgery will take?
Who will be in the operating room?
How will I feel when I get out of surgery?
When can my family see me?
When can I come home?
How big is the surgical opening going to be?
How the procedure is performed and what is his role in the operation? (I am having the Translabrythine Approach)-This approach Dr Barker (neurosurgeon) removes the tumor and Dr McKenna (ENT surgeon) makes the opening and closes me up.  Apparently depending on the surgical approach you are having is what decides who removes the tumor and who makes the opening.
When will I get my sutures removed?
When will I have my follow-up appointment?
What will I feel like when I go home: What can I do, etc.
What are the chances of facial paralysis, etc
I already know this approach I am taking I will lose all hearing in my left ear, but your approach may be different.
How soon I could drive?
What are the chances of a CSF leak?

I hope any of these questions hel you out  :D
