Watching and Waiting
« on: March 02, 2012, 11:14:44 pm »
I was diagnosed in July 2011 with a 6mm AN. I just went for my 6 month MRI. It grew 4mm. It's still pretty small and since surgery won't alleviate any of my current symptoms (with the exception of the balance issues), I am wondering whether to do another 6 month MRI before doing surgery. Hearing preservation is not an issue..I lost all my hearing within 3 months of being diagnosed. Any opinions on whether to wait at least until the next MRI to consider surgery?

That's fairly significant growth in 8 months.  However, if hearing isn't an issue and you believe that removal of the AN won't alleviate your symptoms (why not?) waiting another six months may not be too risky.  However, as tumor growth usually means complications, I would schedule my next MRI for three months, not six...but that's just me.  :)

4.5 cm AN diagnosed 5/06.  Retrosigmoid surgery 6/06.  Follow-up FSR completed 10/06.  Tumor shrinkage & necrosis noted on last MRI.  Life is good.

Life is not the way it's supposed to be. It's the way it is.  The way we cope with it is what makes the difference.

Have you considered Cyberknife?.  My AN is about the same size and i am in wait and watch as well.  I expect if the time comes for treatment, that would be my first choice.

The thinking behind not going with CyberKnife is that I have been told that I am a young AN patient..haha @ 50! I am a better candidate for surgery because statistically I will live at least 75 more years. If (very controversial) the Cybercafe does cause cancer years from now I will have that to deal with. I am thinking when I'm done watching this thing...I'm going to want it gone for good.
That is a good idea about the MRI @ 3 months. I am also going to send my stuff to House for review.
I must say this last visit with Vanderbilt went so much better than the initial one back in July 2011. I felt they took my symptoms or I should say, me, more seriously. They were much more helpful in making a decision's still left it up to me--but added more information to my growing collection. Thanks for the replies.

If you are 50 and plan on living another 75 years, I need to know what you eat, and do you work out? I got my AN out when I was 61, and I'm pretty sure I'm only good for another 30 or so...

Darn! I thought you were on to some great health treatment. My Dad is 91, still dating, and takes his dates all over the world. I'll check to see if he is eating cupcakes!
