do you veer toward your AN side ?
« on: October 12, 2012, 05:43:52 am »
HI,

Just a quick question for those who know about balance problems.  I didn't think I was having any problems with balance, but since I have been diagnosed I notice I keep whacking the right side of my body as I consistently misjudge where I have to be to get through a doorway, not hit into a wall, etc.  My doctor says you veer toward rather than away from your AN side, but my AN is on the left and I keep hitting my right side.  Has anyone else found this, or do you consistently veer toward your AN side? Thanks,

Maxine

I'm an equal opportunity veerer.

When I lurch it goes either way.

No.  Haven't veered in a while, but when I have it's been to the opposite side.

I don't actually "make" trouble..just kind of attract it, fine tune it, and apply it in new and exciting ways

Maxine ~

Frankly, until you asked, I had never thought much about this.

At six years post-op I don't do much veering anymore but when I do it's usually to my right, the opposite side of my AN's former location.

Thanks!  So I guess I'm not just clumsy... or if I am there's a medical reason. I have whacked my elbow for years but now seem to really be bumping into walls.  Having gamma knife in two weeks. Hoping that may help. Thanks for your replies,

I do veer toward my AN side more than the opposite. I always shoulder check walls etc. I do have times where I veer the other way??? Strange.

Dear Maxine,

The simple answer is no. However, the complex answer because of my right sided stroke and consequent hemi paresis that I still have to bear daily predisposes me to fall to my right and stumble into things on my right, even though my balance issues and AN happen to be on my left.

All of this can be very confusing especially when making right and left turns. I was born right handed, even though I have adapted since 1974 to writing and typing with my left hand.

I'm just like arizonajack -

I'm an equal opportunity veerer.

When I lurch it goes either way.

That way I can have matching bruises...   ;D

When I do veer to a side it's usually towards my AN side. When I 1st started standup paddleboarding I almost always fell to the left...AN side.

I had acoustic tumor on left side. I fall to left and veer to right, probably to compensate for left side weakness. I also lost left eye domenance and add the loss in depth perception and I figure I am fortunate to get where I need to get. A couple of years ago I got a service dog to assist me with my mobility and balance. He has been a real plus in my life. I just follow him through doorways and do much better.

I veer both directions.  Isn't it an odd experience to think you are walking fine and out of the blue veer to one side or the other?  Brains!!

My balance is actually pretty good, but I do tend to cock my head toward my AN side a lot.

I have been trying different stances and positions and do not notice any veering problems. If anything after 3 weeks into Proton Therapy balances issues seem to be better. Doctor says this can happen and is a good sign.
