 ???
First there was sudden Hearing loss in one ear. The doctor prescribed Prednisone - 4 weeks of really high doses of Prednisone - which would gradually taper down by the fourth week...and Prilosec to protect his digestive tract ....Omeprazole is the generic name...( The Prednisone  might have helped to restore hearing if the hearing loss was related to a virus. Apparently it wasn't a virus)

The doctor also prescribed an MRI.  It took our insurance awhile to approve the MRI and for the MRI to be scheduled...Meanwhile, he was taking Prednisone and having side effects such as  very edgy irritable behavior, restlessness, insomnia,  rapid breathing that prevented him from using his C pap machine. (he has sleep apnea)  When the MRI finally  indicated he had an Acoustic Neuroma  and  we met with the doc to discuss it,  the doctor said it was okay stop the Prednisone right away, even though he only had 2 days left to go to complete the four weeks.

PROBLEM:
A week after he stopped the Prednisone, he got itchy red welts on some of his body that we  thought could be hives. At first he got them  every other day...usually after showering. We thought it was related to laundry detergent or fabric softener but then he still got the hives after using fragrance free detergent and no fabric softener..and he has no food allergies... OK, so almost three weeks after stopping the heavy dosages of Prednsione he got  really bad hives. He had jogged outside in really cold weather. Then he got bad hives the next day-  after taking a hot shower. It happened again... then again... The itching was really intense.  A couple times he took Benadryl to relieve the itching but this is like a sedative and he needs to feel alert for his job.

Did anyone else have this issue? If so, what did you do? Thanks for replying.

The hives seem to happen daily now, and they did not happen at all before the prednisone and prilosec  that was prescribed for one month...(just an FYI -Prednisone was prescribed JUST IN CASE there MIGHT be a virus that is causing the hearing loss and just in case it might restore hearing. Prilosec or omeprazole or nexium was prescribed because it would prevent digestive issues that Prednisone causes).

Lesson learned: If you have sudden hearing loss in one year and tinnitus (ringing in the ear), doctors usually prescribe 1 month of Prednisone and an MRI of the Brain. You,as a patient, should try to persuade the doctor and the insurance company to schedule the MRI immediately and not to start the Prednisone.

Prednisone seems to have caused a completely healthy person to have an ongoing  issue where the sudden change in temperature causes hives. Example: a shower with warm water, a walk in the cold outside.
