Specialist as PCP?
« on: July 13, 2013, 08:09:07 am »
Hi;
   Does anyone have an Internal Medicine Specialist or Internist as their PCP? I believe one must be recommended by a regular GP for this?
   Maybe an Internist or Internal medicine Specialist could better interface something as AN, NF-2, etc. to something more ordinary as bladder infection, hypertension, etc?

My PCP is an internal medicine specialist who is wonderful to interface my medical issues.  I had no recommendation from a GP.

If you are in an HMO, you would probably need a referral from your PCP of record..  I am in a PPO and do not need referrals.  The most accurate way to find out is call - your insurance carrier customer service number and, if they don't require one, I would probably the specialists office to see their policy.
3/25/13- dx 18x11x14 mm AN, hearing loss in right ear x 5+ years, 5 sessions of CK completed May 2013, now a "post toastie".  Follow up MRI 4/14/14 - 15x19x11 mm. Stable with some signs of necrosis.
 Yippee!

Hi;
   I've wondered how their education is superior to an MD?

PCP requirements probably depend on your particular insurance.  For my insurance women can choose a family practitioner, an internist, or a gyn as PCP.  Men can choose family practitioner or internist.  Currently I don't need referrals, but when I did, my internist as my PCP provided them.
