Long flight after surgery help please :)
« on: November 13, 2013, 01:38:05 am »
Hi Guys  :)

Next month in New Zealand (my insurance & original specialist are there)I will be having my 2nd surgery to remove my AN for good - I am having surgery because I also have some other random benign tumour growing near it which will get done at the same time. I currently live over in Western Australia (approx 7 hour flight). It looks like they will remove my facial nerve but my specialist has a few tricks up his sleave for this :) So flying.....anyone know how long they waited before heading home after surgery? I was thinking at least 2 weeks ? nothing like being in your own bed to recover so I am hoping to hear what others did when they had there surgery out of state, Thanks guys
underwent surgery in 2003 for 4cm sized one - currently being monitored for the bit left remaining as its started to bloom again

Your doctors may have a different protocol but mine had a minimum of 10 days post-op before flying home.  I flew from California to Washington, D.C. and back to West Virginia 12 days post-op with no issues but fatigue.  The fatigue was largely from flight delays due to bad weather systems all across the country that day.  I would strongly advise you to get wheelchair assistance (free with all US airlines), even if you feel great and do not think you need it.

My husband and I also upgraded to economy plus where there was more leg room and easier to wiggle and get comfortable.  I followed my doctor's advice to get up and walk every hour, which I did, even though I did not feel like doing it.

Best thoughts.  Clarice

Definitely check with your surgeon. You said they will be removing another tumor too which may make the recommendation for flying different depending on the approach they take to get to that tumor. I know for a craniotomy (to remove a meningioma), my very conservative neurosurgeon said no air travel for at least 8 weeks.
AN 18x19 mm
3 meningiomas
NF2
AN treated with SRS April 2013
MRI Feb 2016 AN shrunk to 17 x 8 mm :)
Constant tinnitus in AN ear
Severe hearing loss AN ear
