travel day of GK
« on: February 22, 2015, 12:11:00 pm »
Well, I plan on taking Tommy Tumor up to NY to be GK zapped soon and am thinking about the travel. My good son will come with me and we would prefer taking the train to driving. My question is how I am likely to feel (queasy?) after the procedure. Am I likely to need to make stops along the way from NYC to DC?

For those wondering, the AN walking around with me is 13mm x 10mm x 13mm. Balance has been my primary issue.

TIA anyone who reads the posts. You are the most incredibly supportive group of people anyone could hope for!

Martha
AN diagnosed in 2012.  13mm transversely by 10mm cranial caudally by 13 mm anteroposteriorly 2014. At 70 thought maybe it would go away..or I would. But here we are.

Hi,

It's a long trip but you should feel fine...maybe tired-but not queasy.  I just had it done in NYC a couple of weeks ago
and took the train home the following day. I was just tired from getting up so early- they gave me tylenol and sent me on my
way! No problem..
Good luck-

Joyce

Martha - From reading the posts, everyone reacts a bit differently to the GK procedure.  Some leave the hospital and go out for a huge lunch.  On the other hand, I returned to my hotel room and slept for 3-4 hours, but I was fine for a 12 hour car ride the following day.  I am pretty strong physically and mentally, so I was surprised to be so "wiped out".
Diagnosed with 1.3 x 1.2 x 1.3 mm right side AN – September 2013; Gamma Knife at UPMC July 2014; Retrosigmoid surgery at Tufts Medical Center June 2018 to remove 2.0 x 1.8 mm tumor

It's about 4 hours each way by car. By the time you get to the station, wait for the train, get on the train, sit for the 3+ hour trip, get off the train, and get a cab or bus to your destination in NYC, my vote is drive.

After GK, if all you have to do is veg out in the passenger seat for the trip, you should be fine.

The driver is more likely to need a break about half way.

Hi Joyce,

I had my GK at NYU and they will valet park for you.  Whichever big hospital you go to will usually do the same.  Not cheap for sure, but nothing is in NY.  I would check with the hospital before you go (they might have a concierge service). Sometimes you have to be there so early, the valet is not available.  If you will be staying at a hotel the night before, you could probably park nearby there (check with them as well) and take a cab over.  Hospital can usually provide names of nearby hotels, and sometimes have special rates.  Hotel can tell you about parking there and getting cabs.  Sounds like a lot, but once you know what you are dealing with and set it up, it really is not bad.  I had about an hour or so drive home afterward, and really had no problem.  A little sleepy, but that was it.  Good luck.

Best to you,
NYL.

My sister lives in Manhattan. Last time I visited a couple of years ago it was about $15 for the day.

You can probably google parking garages for Manhattan and get rates for garages.

I agree that if you stay at a hotel the night before, the hotel is likely to provide free parking and you are better off taking a cab to the hospital.

I didn't feel a thing after getting GK; in fact, it seemed as though nothing happened.  No dizziness, no change in hearing or tinnitus.

Oh, except for the pain in the head from the screws they used to attach the head frame.  Couple of days later got some black eyes.

Side effects showed up after 3 months in my case.  You may be lucky and end up with no side effects.
8/2/13 - diagnosed 1.9 CM right side; 1/13/14 - MRI it got bigger!; 2/10/14 - GK; 8/18/14 - shrinking; 8/17/15 - still shrinking, reduced symptoms
