Headaches and barometric pressure
« on: September 11, 2014, 06:43:48 am »
Hi; I'm 3 years post op, middle fossa surgery. Developed chronic daily headache about 6 months after my surgery. Nobody has been able to give me a satisfactory "why" (headaches were extremely rare for me pre-surgery). I've become a connoisseur of headaches, their particular nuances, and noticing lately that when the barometric pressure drops, the vice grip around my skull tightens considerably and the headache worsens. Does anyone else have this experience?

Hi Lesliegc .....

Although I do not have chronic headaches from my brain surgeries, I have had barometric pressure headaches all of my life.  It really is not fun to be able to tell when a change in weather is coming this way, but I know of no remedy for it.

Thankfully most of the time the headache is short-lived just before the new weather system arrives.  In my case, they seem to be less severe now than when I was young ..... no explanation why.  I used to have to take some heavy duty pain-killer to be able to function.  Now I can often sleep it off with Extra Strength Tylenol.

Hi Leslie! Yes, you are not alone when it comes to barometric pressures and headaches.  For a while there after my middle fossa I too experienced some pretty good ones.  Nowadays, only when the pressure really varies quickly do I notice it.  I think that's to human body's response to being injured like that.  Same thing for people with bad knees/joints, they can feel when pressure changes.  Welcome to the "new normal"! :)

Thanks, you two. Not so "new" this "normal"! 3 years feels like a pretty long time to me. Ah well

Hi Lesliegc,

I've had headaches most of my adult life related to barometric pressure changes and believe it or not during full moon nights.  I do notice since having Gamma Knife that my headaches now are different with the barometric changes.  I have more of a wonky feeling than pain and I sure know when a weather system is changing.   Advil is my best friend on those days!

I'm 2 years post Gamma Knife and live with balance, tinnitus, headache problems on a daily basis.
Yes pressure changes definitely effect  my head like a vice grip. Just getting out of my air condition car
has an effect. Walking into stores from the outside. The last time I flew on a plane just before my Gamma surgery was a very painful experience and I will never fly again. I think it has something to do with not being able to stabilize your inner pressure that you would normally have with both ears functioning properly. With normal ear function you can stabilize pressure by yawning or by opening your mouth wide like most people do when flying. But with one ear I no longer have that capability.
I'm afraid I my damage my one good ear by subjecting it to the intense pressure of flying so I don't fly.

Im 8 years post op and have constant pain. But changes in the barometric pressure kill me! When it rains or snows my pain increases, generally the worse the weather the moreni hurt. I have a gap in my skull about the size of my index finger, when the pressure changes drastically ive had the tissues in the gap swell up to were it is raised above the hight of my skull(its usually sunken down) i hope it helps knowing there is someone who experiences what u do.
