This should probably be stickied someplace. For people that want to use PubMed, many articles are not accessible if you are not at a university (a public library may have access). However, if you look on the right side of the hit list, if there is something that says, PMC Full Text, Free, then you can read it if you click on it. NIH requires some articles, I think ones published with NIH funds, to be freely accessible to the public. A few journals will do this on their own.

It is mainly because publishing costs in journals are very high. They are not laid out like magazines with lots of ads. Just scientific articles so they get the revenue to pay production and editing costs from subscripions and what they charge authors to publish.

This is an interesting website.
www.cureus.com
Every paper is peer reviewed and scored by medical professionals and it's free.
Researchers have a lot of problems getting their papers peer reviewed and the process costs time money or both.

Peer review definitely has its flaws and can be quite frustrating. When editors and reviewers are good, it greatly strengthens a paper, however, that takes a lot of effort and no pay, except for executive editors. For grants, it's way worse since your life depends on it. Everyone has a bad story about grant reviews. Just comes with the job.
