After my first surgery, oxy was helping with my pain. After my second surgery for a CSF leak a month later, the oxy wouldn't touch the pain. It was so bad they even tested for meningitis, as I was sensitive to light, oxy wasn't touching the pain, and had difficulty moving my neck.
I was put on a nerve block and 50 of tramadol in addition to the steroid. I felt better immediately. I weaned off the steroid first, then the tramadol a couple days later and the nerve block after about 10 days (I took one pill twice a day for about 10 days). I weaned one at a time with no remaining pain. Now, two weeks post second surgery, I am only taking two advil as needed, which is 0-2x/day.
I was afraid of the nerve block based on what I've read here but I was assured by relatives in the medical field that it was such a low dose and temporary that it wasn't going to have ill effects. And for me, it did not.
Good luck to you.
