US Expat Insurance Help
« on: October 14, 2024, 10:36:21 am »
Hi Everyone,

I'm a US citizen currently living in Denmark on a temporary residence permit. I was diagnosed with a 7mm Schwannoma in early July of this year while abroad. The overwhelming majority of small tumors here are watched, which was my initial plan of treatment. I have been, however, experiencing increasing hearing loss, most recently estimated last month at 30 - 40 % loss. This has lead me to seek out more proactive options, including returning to the US for surgery, however I'm no longer employed there and without insurance.

As I try to navigate my insurance options, I was wondering if anyone could provide input or has been in a similar situation? Do I need to reside in the US to start applying for a healthcare plan that will cover a potential surgery? I have had consultations with UCSD and NYU and was a former resident of New York State.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations or advice.

Hi Stanislaus4048!

Thank you for posting your question.  I think it's a good one for our ANA Community.  I do not have the answer you are looking for as I have not experienced what you have.  However, insurance options can vary from company to company and from state to state.  I think it would be difficult for any of us to give you a lot of helpful advice.  If you become employed, you may be limited by the insurance coverage your new employer has (or blessed by it).

If you remain unemployed, you may need to speak with an insurance agent to see what insurance would be best for you.  I'm about to retire, and I will be changing insurance companies, and I have been surprised by the various options which are out there.

I wish you well in your acoustic neuroma journey and your endeavor to find insurance.
