Papilledema

Jeff is at Tampa General waiting information. He has papilledema and a blood clot behind the eye. Has anyone else had this problem? He has vision problems (AN side) and headaches behind the eye. He saw a neuropthamologist yesterday. His surgery was on 3/9 Translab.

Judith - This is the first time I have seen this question come up. Wish I had answer. I know this is hard on Jeff, but also know it is doubly hard on you. Keeping you both in my thoughts.

I just googled what you said and it states the cause if excessive spinal fluid pushing on the optic nerve due to a brain tumor.  We know his tumor is out and he has swelling.  It does state that once the pressure is relieved it can relieve the eye swelling and problems but to get treatment right away.  Which you guys are doing so in my optimistic state of mind Jeff will be just fine!  You acted fast and you are in the right place.  I had vision problems immediately after surgery and they have disappated greatly in the 7 mos. You know upon further reading I had similiar symptoms to a mild degree.  I'm hoping Jeff's is too!

Glad things are perking along.  I agree the waiting is the hardest part!  I've been waiting for a week for some test results and have another week to go  UGH!

Sending good vibes to your daughter.  Gee, I didn't think you're kids were old enough for brain bowls?  I know she'll do fine but know she's probably anxious because her dad isn't around.  Jeff mentioned how close you all were.

I am happy to read the thread about optic problems.  I wish Jeff the best. 

I have questioned my opthamologist and surgeon, but never received confirmation of a relationship between AN and optic problems.  But five years ago I a large floater (blood clot breaking up) inside my rt. eye vitreous .  I rushed to the doctor and had several exams and accepted a diagnosis of detaching vitreous. The vitreous rips, the fluid leaks, and it slowly detaches from the back wall of the eye and settles into the bottom.  My retina is fine, although I go back for check ups.  Other than waiting and literally watching the pieces of blood to finish their journey to the bottom of my eyeball I have had not other symptoms.  At this point I am wondering if the clot inside my eye started with pressure from the tumor on that side.

The opthamoligist was looking for a disgnosis of macular degeneration which he never found.  If he had suggested an MRI at that time, perhaps we would have found a small AN.  Considering mine was 2 cm in 2005 maybe it was optimal size anyway, large enough to have taken my balance nerve.  It seems the tinnitus started in 2001, too!

Right before my translab surgery--I decided (on my own) to get my eyes checked since its been awhile (I don't wear glasses).
they found papilledema on my right eye (opposite of AN side). They put me on a round of steriods. I was told that it was caused by the pressure of the AN on the brain. I haven't been checked since. I'm actually going back to the eye dr this week.

Thanks for sharing your eye problems.  We thought we were the only ones.   Chet was also diagnosed with  detaching vitreous after a floater was found.   At the same appointment he was diagnosed as being in the early stages  macular degeneration.  The thought of duel sensory impairment (hearing and vision, he has total right side hearing loss and significant left side loss) greatly concerns me,(my biggest concern) but we'll cross that bridge when it comes.

Just for a heads up for those reading this tread Chet thought the floater was just an eyelash moving at times to where he could see it.  I'm not sure how long he noticed it before he mentioned it to me, but having read up on things was able to get him into the eye doctor immediately.  Please, any changes no matter how small or insignificant please get yourself into your eye doctor ASAP.
