QUESTIONS REGARDING MRI/ WITH CONTRAST & IAC
« on: October 06, 2007, 11:35:35 pm »
SCHEDULLED FOR AN MRI WEDNESDAY AND WAS WONDERING IF ANYONE CAN EXPLAIN THE IAC PART OF THE MRI.  I HAVE TO WAIT 24 TO 48 HOURS AFTER THE MRI FOR THE REPORT TO BE SENT TO MY DOCTOR.  TRYING TO STAY CALM.  DON'T KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT.  I TOOK A BAD FALL DOWN SOME STEPS AND WAS SENT TO THE EMERGENCY ROOM BY AMBULANCE.  THIS WAS 2 WEEKS AGO.  JUST NOW GETTING THE MRI DONE.  I HAVE REALLY BAD HEADACE'S AND HURT JUST ABOUT EVERYWHERE.  BY BIGGEST WORRY IS THAT IF EVERYTHING IS OK WITH MY HEAD.  MY SURGERY WAS 16 MONTHS AGO.  JUST HAD A LOT OF PAIN IN THE BACK OF MY HEAD AND NECK AND A WEIRD FEELING ON TOP OF MY HEAD.  THE MRI IS STRESSFULL ENOUGH,  AND THEN TRYING TO RECOVER FROM THE FALL HAS ME REALLY MESSED UP.  ANYWAY, CAN SOMEONE EXPLAIN PLEASE ABOUT THE IAC AND WHAT THEY ARE LOOKING FOR.  THIS MRI IS FOR THE FALL PROBLEM, BUT I HAVE NOT HAD AN MRI SINCE SURGERY, AND AM VERY ANXIOUS.  ANY ADVICE?  I HAD A CAT SCAN AT THE HOSPITAL FOR MY HEAD AND BACK.  IT CAME BACK OK, JUST CONTUSIONS (DON'T THINK I SPELLED THAT RIGHT) BUT EVERYONE IS CONCERNED THAT I NEED TO SEE A MY SURGERY DOCTOR TO CONFIRM EVERYTHING IS OK. I'VE JUST REALLY BEEN SHAKEN UP, AND IN A LOT OF PAIN, AND EVERYTHING SEEM'S TO BE GOING SO SLOW CHECKING ME OUT.  I JUST FEEL LIKE I'M HAVING PROBLEMS ALL OVER AGAIN, THAT I HAVE WORKED THROUGH.  JUST NEEDED TO VENT, I GUESS.  ALL OF THIS IS SO STRESSFULL.  I'M THANKFUL I DIDN'T BREAK ANYTHING, BUT FEEL LIKE I'VE BEEN HIT WITH A HAMMER EVERYWHERE.  I GUESS I NEED A PITY PARTY.  ANY ADVICE?  THANKS, BB

HI BB,

I think IAC stands for Internal acoustic canal, or Internal auditory canal, something like that, according to what I found from googling medical terms. If the CT showed up that things are ok, then they are probably not in an emergency to do the MRI and other checks. I guess, I'm not an expert, but they checked you out already, so rest on that result for now. I'm sure you ARE in pain all over, a fall down stairs is a serious thing! NO wonder, even just your body's reaction to the fall would give you pain,  bruises, the tension of the the actual fall, the shock... Take it slow and easy and look after yourself. You didn't break anything which is great! Now for the rest, your body needs to recover from the fall. The MRI will be fine.
Let us know how you get on.
Ciao, Lorenzo

Internal auditory canal, in fact, based on the description given on the ANA web site. That is where ANs start growing. I suspect they want to do the MRI do make sure that the fall didn't in some way stress the area where you had surgery. Since the CT scan came back okay already, they are just being careful. (And you spelled contusions correctly.)

As Lorenzo said, You have had a fall and banged your head, which really is somewhat like being hit with a hammer everywhere. Rest and recuperate, and get well soon.
