Lots of Ear Pain
« on: March 11, 2008, 11:42:06 am »
I notice my hearing getting a bit worse in my AN ear.....I'm just feeling a bit more "plugged" in that ear than normal.  Is it normal to have pain in the AN ear as well???  I've been having some serious pain on that side of my head and ear the last week or so.

Hi, Melissa:

Frankly, with an acoustic neuroma, there really isn't a normative condition.  However, a sensation of ear 'blockage' is not at all uncommon.  Ear pain - in varying degrees - is also familiar, although it usually isn't really 'in' the ear but radiates from the vestibular-cochlear ('8th') nerve that is being pressed by the AN.  This kind of pain and discomfort is what often motivates AN patients to move ahead with surgery or radiation (or both).  I trust your pain and discomfort will be alleviated, soon.

Hi Melissa  - 8 months or so prior to my AN diagnosis, I would get the most excrutiating, stabbing ear pain that would literally stop me in my tracks. It would last anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes. These attacks occured every couple of weeks. More often though, I would experience what felt like a constant ear ache and pressure. Very similar to the ear pain/pressure when flying.

It's certainly worth mentioning to your doctor.

Hi Melissa,

I get ear pain of and on in both ears.  Sometimes a loud noise causes it. If I ride a bike it causes it. If I were to wear earplugs it causes an earache.  Someone else said sort of like airplane pressure.  This started to occur about 18 months post radiation treatment.  I don't wear earplugs anymore only earmuffs which  seems pretty funny to my neighbors, since I live in Florida.  But they do the trick.

Hi Melissa,

I have over the last couple of weeks had increased fullness, ache and worse tinnitus.  Sometimes feel like something is 'hooked' in there.  Local ENT guy still insisting it's all in my head - well I have news for him - IT IS!   ::)
Why do some specialists insist these things are nothing to do with the AN?
