My initial symptom was loss of balance in the dark.  After reading on here somewhere about night lights, I put several throughout my house.  They are very low lighting but it gives me a focal point which helps.  In particular, I didn't want to get out of bed in the middle of the night, stumble and wake my husband.  When outside at night and not on pavement, I tend to lift my feet higher and place them lighter to get a feel for the surface before shifting my weight completely to that foot.
