metallic taste
« on: August 12, 2009, 01:52:14 pm »
First of all, I am so grateful for this forum.  As I continue to read more and more, I am comforted in knowing that what I am experiencing is something others have experienced as well and that it will get better with time.  It is so good to be able to share with others who understand.  This week I went back to work, and though I only work 5 hours per day at a desk job, I was pretty exhausted after the first day back (5 hours).  I have facial paralysis which makes eating challenging and tiring.  Today I went out for lunch with some friends and was glad to be able to go home and rest.  I have had lost some taste both before and after surgery, but today the metallic taste was very pronounced.  What a bummer to eat food that tastes like metal.  My head feels like a bungee cord is tied around it which contributes to the exhaustion.  Have others experienced this and does it go away, or does one just adjust to it?  The up side is that I eat less because food doesn't taste right.
Diagnosed March-09 with 2.7 cm x 1.7 cm tumor; Translab surgery (13 hours) - UW Hospitals & Clinics - Madison, WI on May 20,2009;  unresponsive facial nerve post-surgery; doing well with hearing, balance, and taste loss

MMH ~

Thanks for the kind words regarding this forum.  Our members make it what it is and they're a great bunch.

As you know from reading the posts here, every AN patient has a slightly different experience but there are many constants in the recovery period.  The 'tight' feeling in your head will probably diminish as everything heals, which can take many weeks.  The loss of taste is more problematic.  From my understanding (based on other people's experiences) it will go away eventually.  'Eventually' meaning only that the metallic taste very likely won't be permanent, although with AN recovery, there are never any guarantees.   Prior to my AN diagnosis, I lost the sense of taste but instead of a metallic taste, all food seemed tasteless, even foods that I once loved.  My appetite quickly diminished, my stomach actually shrunk and I lost over 35 (unwanted) pounds.  Within 48 hours of my AN debulking surgery (the surgeon reduced the size of the tumor to get it off my cranial nerves and brainstem...it was later irradiated) my sense of taste returned and was actually enhanced a bit, although I retain a very small 'numb' spot on the side of my tongue, which is only a very minor annoyance.  I've managed to keep the lost weight off in the 3 years since my surgery.  Smaller portions and much less 'junk food' are a big part of that success.  My pre-diagnosis months of having no appetite seems to have altered my desire for big meals and empty calories.  I jokingly called it my 'AN diet'.  :)

My point is that we all have a slightly different AN experience but from what you've written, I believe you're going to come through your recovery - which takes months for some issues to resolve - just fine.

I know that for hemifacial spasm surgery the metallic taste is very common and usually resolves over time. Some people take longer than others, of course. Mine was very mild and short-lived. In fact I don't know exactly when it disappeared, I just realized one day it was not longer there and hadn't been for a while.

I'm 8 months post-op and my metallic taste coincided with nerve regeneration, so I guess there's an up side, at least for me. Both started about 6 months post-op and are on going. The metallic taste is annoying but you get used to it after a while. It really makes you appreciate food with a strong flavor i.e. mexican, pizza, and other spicy foods. I don't know if I've just adjusted to it or if maybe it's getting a little better lately. Others say it will go away in time. How much time is a very individual thing though, just like all over things AN.

I'm about 18 months post op and I have a very strong metallic taste. Additionally, since I've had the radiation therapy, the left (AN) side of my mouth is extremely sensitive. So not only does food tastes really bad, if it's not soft (like mashed potatoes, etc) it hurts my mouth. And please do not add any hint of black pepper or any such seasoning. I wanted to see what others have tried. The left side of my face is still numb, so I bite my lip or jaw and I could make a mess on that side of my face/chin and not know...EMBARRASSING!! The left side of my mouth is also very dry. With so much going on with my mouth, I barely eat but the weight is not coming off as it should!  :o

Any ideas? I'd appreciate it very much as I'm at the end of my rope!!!  Thank you

Long hard struggle back. Did I have to have this surgery?

I am about had surgery about 7 weeks ago, and I have a more 'sour' taste than 'metallic' taste. I told my doctor that ice cream really helps make the taste go away, and he said that is really weird, most people say dairy products make it worse! Maybe I just like ice cream more than most people  ;D It is very annoying, but my mouth has been seeming less dry than before. Not pre-surgery level, but not as bad. I still stay away from chips, they just suck the moisture right out of my mouth. Spicy food is great, hot sauce really kills the sour taste the best. I barely ever drink pop, but post-op I really it. Hopefully it will improve for you soon. - Darin

As others have said, metallic mouth is very common and it usually disappears in time.  But everyone's timeframe seems to be different, so it's hard to predict when yours will go away.

Darin's experience of his taste buds being "off" is very common too and, like the metallic mouth, it should go away in time.

I had an awful taste for several months that changed how most everything tasted.  Then, gradually, that went away and now I hardly notice any difference at all.  (I've never experienced any facial issues, so the metallic taste is not necessarily tied to that.)  Hang in there!  It'll likely improve over time and at such a pace you'll barely notice til one day you find that you're taste buds are working just fine.

I had the metallic taste which then change to a feeling like my tongue was burnt and then it switch to a salty spot and now it starting to fade...   somewhere in the archives someone mentioned a mouthwash that seemed to help?  Biotine or something like that... for me it's sugarless gum (I must chew a piece for about 5 minutes... spit it out... and start another piece)... that or constant sips of water...

Biotene makes an entire line of products that generally help with dry mouth - toothpaste, a gel you put on your tongue, mouthwash, etc.  After my surgery, I purchased Biotene products from drugstore.com, but I think you can find them at just about any drug store.

Here is a thread that talks about Biotene - and it does mentioning people using it for "funny" tastes in their mouth.
