Hey cin,
Daughter of a pharmacist here but can't speak as a doc since I'm not. I know meds such as amitryptoline, neurontin, paxil, etc, when used in low doses, are prescribed to help to "calm" nerve endings for many kinds of neuralgic pain. Some do have side affects such as weight gain, sleeping issues (mostly make you drowsy), etc. I've been on a number of these over the years for numerous neuralgic pains that I endure (non-AN related). As one doc told me, they are to try to calm down the funky nerve endings when they are in overdrive. (Nice for a doc to speak laymen instead of Latin, eh?
)
For headaches, I've been diagnosed with 3 different kinds of migraines. Docs want to up my dosage of neurontin but I can't due to sensitivities to meds. My headache doc also prescribed Indomethicin but due to GI issues, I can't take it.
For me... I find you have to (fortunately, but unfortunately) play with some of the meds used for headaches to find the right combo that will work for your specific situation. Captn Deb has cluster headaches (from what I hear, the worst of the worst when it comes to pain) and she's been on a variety of headaches meds over time to try to help the situation (from Imitrex to Neurontin to lordy, I can't keep track.....).
I can't respond for migranol as I dont' know anything about it, but there are other meds out there that may be worth checking out. Please make sure you are in the hands of a neurologist with a specialty for headaches. I take Tramadol on occassion, as well as Imitrex (but that makes me queezy), so like you, a tough situation for me as well.
I may be right, I may be wrong. Sometimes, I deal with the side affects (ie: weight gain, etc) if in the long run the headaches (or whatever) are better controlled by the med I take for it. Just my 2 cents.
Hang in there.... knitting is a great hobby for those of us housebound in N. England winter's
and hang in there... I'm cheering you on.
