Ipsilateral Reflex
« on: January 23, 2010, 07:04:17 pm »
Any help in defining this would be appreciated.  I just received a copy of my 8/5 hearing test I had at UMASS.  Dr. McKenna's office never received a copy because they wanted $2.75 for it which I was happy to pay.  I want to bring it to Dr. McKenna on 3/15 so he can compare it to the hearing test I had 12/23 at MEEI.

On 8/5, the Ipsilateral Reflex in my left ear was absent.  I'll be curious to find out if it is still absent...
Proton Radiation for my hemangioma at MGH December 2009.  Hearing has improved.  Doing great!

Assuming this is about the acoustic reflex, Dr. Timothy Hain will explain it far better than I ever could:

http://www.dizziness-and-balance.com/testing/acoustic_reflexes.htm

He says: "Reflexes may be absent even to louder inputs in persons with .... 8th nerve hearing loss (such as due to an acoustic neuroma)"

As far as I can tell, it means you might find yourself more sensitive to very loud sounds (if you still have hearing on that side), but Dr. Hain seems to suggest not worrying about it unless and until it is a problem.
