Dealing with Telling people about deafness
« on: August 19, 2005, 09:57:09 am »
I had a job interview yesterday and was quite worried about whether or not to tell them about my deafness. I didn't. It won't affect my job performance and I didn't want it to become a factor in the hiring process.

How and when do you tell people about your disability?

I would not mention it in the job interview process.
If you are offered a job, you really should notify your employer of any disabilities you may have once you have accepted...even if you do not think they are relavent to the job or your performance. Reason being - you are protected under the American Disabilities Act (ADA) in case it ever does become a problem. However, if the employer was never aware of your disability in the first place, it puts you at a disadvantage.
