Bald spots from radiation?
« on: October 30, 2010, 03:51:46 pm »
:o Can everyone help me out with their experience with bald spots after radiation? First, did you get them.? If yes, how long before you saw growth? And third, was it thin or no difference? And last, (not sure if I want to know this one) did any spots remain permanent?
Thank you,
Shannon

Hi,

I had bald spots in the 3 different areas where I received radiation but it quickly grew back.  No worries.   ;D
Proton Radiation for my hemangioma at MGH December 2009.  Hearing has improved.  Doing great!

I did not have any baldness or thinning after receiving CK. According to my doctors at Stanford, CK does not cause baldness anywhere, including at the sites of treatment.

Best wishes,

Shannon ~

I underwent 26 FSR sessions and did not develop any bald spots.  My radiation oncologist said that I wouldn't due to the relatively low amounts of (daily) radiation I received (27 gy total).

4.5 cm AN diagnosed 5/06.  Retrosigmoid surgery 6/06.  Follow-up FSR completed 10/06.  Tumor shrinkage & necrosis noted on last MRI.  Life is good.

Life is not the way it's supposed to be. It's the way it is.  The way we cope with it is what makes the difference.

I received gamma knife treatment almost two months ago and was told the radiation received would not injure anything else.  Well, my hair is definitely thinning these days, not in spots but generally.  But after all I just turned 64 and my maternal grandfather was bald so who knows...

Husband had one dose with Cyberknife on 10/1/07 and did develop a round (about 2") bald spot right where the cone had been.  It grew back quickly but he thinks that the area is still thin.  I cut his hair and think he's going bald and losing hair anyway!!  ;)

CK done almost 5 yrs ago. Developed dime-size spots on 2 locations on my front hairline.  Has grown back.... a bit thinner but it filled in.  Dr's have told me that it was all based on delivery location of the radiation beam.  My hair is thick enough to help cover, so I'm ok with it, as long as the radiation did the trick (which it has).

I had radiation 6 month ago GK, and my hair just recently has been thinning out. It used to also be very curly, but I lost a lot of the curls too. It looks like the GK zapped everything. Hopefully.

Hi to ALL ---

I finished a 30 day "FSR" treatment in July.    Yes, I did have some hair loss, but it was so small and in an area that my other hair covered it.    I agree, if the treatment works, a loss of alittle hair is worth it!!.    Had a 3 month recheck and the tumor has decreased in size alittle.   I will be going back in July for a one year repeat.    I have faith that it will be smaller at that time!!

To all of you that are going thru treatment now or are looking for a treatment  --- good luck to you.   This is a great place to come for help.   A lot of good friends are here with a lot of good information.    If any of you have any questions, I sure would be willing to help.

          Take care ---

Thank you all for your responses.  I had the 5 days of Radiation with the Novalis Tx and I got 5 bald spots.  2 of them are dime-sized and the others are 50 cent piece size.  They are as smooth as a baby bottom still.  I can cover all but one with the rest of my hair.  I was just wondering if I am in the majority.  But it seems as if I have a bit more hair loss then most.  I am sure it will start growing back soon.  Thank you for your insight.

I have seen figures quoted of 10% of people with AN getting temporary bald spots after GK or CK treatment.
Most apparently dissappear in time.
10x5x5mm AN
Sudden Partial hearing loss 5/28/10
Diagnosed 7/4/10
CK 7/27/10
2/21/11 Swelling 13x6x7mm
10/16/11 Hearing returned, balance improved. Feel totally back to normal most days
3/1/12 Sudden Hearing loss, steroids, hearing back.
9/16/13 Life is just like before my AN. ALL Good!
