The latest in drug theropy
« on: March 28, 2011, 09:08:13 am »
Went to AN meeting this weekend (posted "great meeting" AN community) with some interesting news on the latest drug theropies for ANs. Making progress with alot of work being done with NF2 patients. Regular ANs being delt with a little different with volunteers being asked to take the drug before their scheduled surgery then AN being anaylized afterwoods. There are a few drugs being tested and alot of optimism on the horizon perhaps for another alternitive way to deal with ANs.  Best wishes, Mickey

I have to agree with you Mickey! It was really great to hear about all the research going on for AN's and for NF2. This can be an important breakthrough for so many of us- imagine just taking some medication to "kill the bugger" instead of having our heads cracked open or radiated :)

Didn't someone post a link recently about the drugs in question?

Re: The latest in drug therapy -- DCA?

Here are two interesting links on DCA (Dichloroacetic acid) which has been shown to shrink cancerous tumors in rats:

It occurs naturally in chlorinated drinking water (could the 2 liters of water per day Derek is drinking be helping to shrink his tumor?)  Not sure what effect DCA has on non-cancerous tumors... does anyone out there in AN land know about this?

C'est moi,
Lisa M

I will post this in Derek'sTop Ten thread too.

One of the drugs mentioned at the symposium was Avastin. It's a biological targeted therapy, I believe. They are doing trials using Avastin alone and Avastin along with radiation. Maybe someday there really will be a magic pill!
