Thin cut MRI ????
« on: January 22, 2012, 11:29:40 am »
Has anyone had this type of MRI?
Wondering is this worth the time and expense so soon after my original MRI; 3 months.
Spoke with a doctor yesterday that said she'd order a thin cut MRI for me if I were her patient.  She didn't take the time to explain all the whys to this, was more call and make an appointment and we'll go from there.
I know from reading posts that the more doctors I see the better.
Looked on line for an explanation of thin cut MRI but was not successful to my satisfaction.
Also, wondering if Medicare will pay for another MRI three months after the first one?

I had one as part of the planning for radiation. The thinner, more numerous cuts provides for a more complete model of the tumor in all dimensions.  I should point out that was my 10th MRI in two years...so at least my surgeons don't feel they are necessary on a regular basis.

Bob the tumor: 4.4cm x 3.9cm x 4.1 cm.
Trans-Lab and Retro-sigmoid at MCV on 2/12/2010.

Removed 90-95% in a 32 hour surgery. Two weeks in ICU.  SSD Left.

The doctor did say something about it concentrating on the tumor more and seeing what nerves it's growing on, I think.  So I'm assuming that it would be like a regular MRI (for me) maybe just a little longer.  I was surprised my current MRI CD has something like 384 pictures on it.
So to me, from what you have written and what I think I remember the doctor saying, it sounds like this would be a good MRI to have.
Glad to hear from you Tod and hope all is going well for you.   :)

My doc said the thin cut MRI give more detail & measures the AN more accurately. I'm off to have my second brain MRI on Monday 23rd Jan. It'll be interesting to see if the CD for this one has more images on it than the last one (348)
2011 8 x 7 mm AN, & 20 x 22 mm M found, both on the left. Mosaic NF2 diagnosed. Some hearing loss
2014 hearing 30% on left, now using hearing aid (HA)
2015 Now have CROS HA - no longer hear enough for HA to be useful in AN ear
2016 Use an FM system on occasion at work to supplement HA

I have had both regular cut (3mm I think) and thin cut (1mm) MRI's and asked lots of questions to an actual radiologist back then.   When you are dealing with tumors the thin cut is the best for all the reasons you said above.   I honestly don't remember it costing much more, but been over 2 years.

You may find something on here if you search T3 mri.

As for Medicare, don't know....but maybe worth a call to them.   OR it may say in the 2012 guidelines which are available online.

Actually I think Tesla 3 would be better than T3.   Here is a link I had saved  ;)

Thanks all.  Confirmed what I thought I knew about it and will try the 2012 booklet for Medicare.  Hate dealing with govt.   ;)
Denise, thanks for the link.   :)
