Mono headphones for portable stereos?
« on: August 03, 2006, 11:57:22 am »
Post-AN surgery, I'm permanently deaf in my right ear.  I love music, and I just got an iPod for my birthday.  Does anyone know where I can get a single earbud, headphone, or earphone that blends the stereo output from the iPod (or any other stereo source) into a mono output into a single ear?  If I just cut one of the earbuds off, I'll miss sounds that are mixed to the missing side.
Thanks!

Forgive me for seeing the negative here
- you are SSD ? (single sided deaf ?)
You need to be careful with the one good side
treasure what you have
So walkman, or Ipod - fine
So long as you keep the volume down
dont attempt to listen on the subway etc
sorry to sound like your mum.....
Best regards
Tony

Hi David

I searched as much as I could for a special headphone (deaf on the left side).  For work, I have a clam shell ear piece that fits over my ear, but hard to locate those.  I use a regular headphone set for my portable CD, but at a normal volume, don't need to damage the only good ear I have.

Good luck in your search

Thanks, everyone, for the thoughtful and timely replies.

I followed the link in Bruce's post to the discussion thread that suggested a Radio Shack adapter that should do the trick for $2.99.  Very interesting discussion there.  Here is the Radio Shack part description and part number:

1/8" Stereo Plug to 1/8" Mono Plug Adapter
Item#: 2102690

I'll let you all know if it works, and I promise to take care of my good ear.

Thanks again!

Wow that would be great--I blast the stereo on Radio Margaritaville on the computer here in the studio and Dr. Love likes to watch TV while he's working up here. Might keep our marriage together!

I use the Radio shack mono adapter for music and even when I'm playing bass with the band.  I've found its easier to hear the key changes if I wear headphones and link into the amp with a mono adapter.  I've also discovered something weird...at concerts if I'm sitting in the audiance I cup my hand behind the good ear and the volume and clarity is so much better (although it makes me look really weird, but at my age I always look weird!)

You're funny Dale!  When I went to a concert I tried using ear plugs but it really didn't help.  It was better if I just stuck my finger in my good ear when I needed to.  I probably had lots of people wondering what I was doing but at this stage in the game, I really don't care any more! lol

Gotta keep that sense of humor going Static, otherwise the trials of life will just wear you down.  Capt Deb is a good example of proper attitude, she's my heroine.  I want to be like her when I grow up ;D
