Numbness post op
« on: September 09, 2012, 09:34:10 am »
Has anyone who's had numbness post op ex: facial numbness lip tongueetc. Had it almost disappear a few months post op then reappear but not as intense? I was very numb post op because of my trigeminal nerve. As months went by the numbness was about gone and now it's back but not as intense. Anyone?
14mm dx 9/07. CK done Seattle  1 year MRI showed some shrinkage. 4 year MRI 2mm growth nothing conclusive. Trigminal nerve involvment Retrosigmoid Friedmand/Schwartz HEI March 7,2012

Hi Mindy,

something similar happened to me. I had numbness pre-op (this was actually my presenting symptom, leading to the AN discovery), but no trigeminal neuralgia. It went away  as soon as I woke up after surgery. Then, after about a month it appeared again - it progressed rapidly within a couple of days and it was quite intense.  After about a month, it gradually disappeared and I have never had any problems again. My surgeon said that fluctuations in sensory nerves are not uncommon post-op. Your timeline though seems a bit different than mine, but you also had more intense trigeminal symptoms. I hope the numbness will go away soon, but I would check this out with Dr. Friedman.

GK on April 23rd 2008 for 2.9 cm AN at Toronto Western Hospital. Subsequent MRIs showed darkening initially, then growth. Retrosigmoid surgery on April 26th, 2011 with Drs. Akagami and Westerberg at Vancouver General Hospital. Graduallly lost hearing after GK and now SSD but no other issues.

Thank you for your help. I know not many people have trigeminal involvement like we do. I feel like an even more rare breed since I had CK, trigeminal involvement, surgery, and still have my AN. I do have great hearing still. I guess that is a plus. I know nerves take a long time to heal. I emailed Dr. Friedman and he said its likely the healing process and residual effects of radiation. Keep an eye on it. He was going to include Dr. Schwartz also. I am sending him my MRI from a few weeks ago so he has it to look at.
I will just ride it out to see.
