How offten do you have an MRI post treatment?
« on: March 02, 2014, 02:26:56 pm »
With my frist AN in 1985 I was having MRI's every year for the frist two years. Then every couple years then in 1993 they found a recurrence of my AN. Then MRI's every couple years again. Finally every 3-4 years, now I don't know how offten to get them. Any time I go to the Doctor with a severe headache they want to do a MRI. Had my last one 1/2012 now I have to go to Doctor with the headaches again and I know he will want me to have another. They haven't found anything since 1993 I think I should be sone with the MRI's. By the way these are not Doctors famialiar with AN just famialy Doctors. Last Doctor that knew anything about reading a MRI died this summer. How offten do you have a MRI?

Badyellowvette ~

I underwent AN debulking surgery followed by FSR in mid-2006.  Thereafter, I had an MRI every six months for the next two years.  Initially, I had some mild post-radiation swelling but by the end of 2008 necrosis had set in, the remaining tumor showed indications of shrinking a bit, I had absolutely no symptoms and was doing well so my neurosurgeon discharged me.  He did say another MRI in five years would be something to consider but didn't seem to think it would be necessary.  Although my neurosurgeon retired a few years ago, his office never contacted me regarding any further MRI scans.

However, that's one AN patient and one doctor.  I've seen posts that give accounts of AN patients having MRI scans every year for five years, then every three or five years as well as other frequencies.  That tells me there is no 'standard' but doctors make their own call based on the patient and his/her recovery as well as other factors.  My procedure and recovery went splendidly so I can see why my doctor was sanguine regarding my undergoing MRI scans for years into the future.  Of course I'm hyper-aware of any possible changes or return of AN symptoms.  Should that occur, I'll contact the office where my former neurosurgeon practiced, see his replacement and ask for an MRI.  Naturally, I hope I never need to do that.

Because MRI scans do not employ radiation I don't find them risky, just tedious.  However, they are also very expensive and health insurance companies may not pay for too-frequent MRI scans unless a good medical reason can be offered by the doctor requesting the scan.

4.5 cm AN diagnosed 5/06.  Retrosigmoid surgery 6/06.  Follow-up FSR completed 10/06.  Tumor shrinkage & necrosis noted on last MRI.  Life is good.

Life is not the way it's supposed to be. It's the way it is.  The way we cope with it is what makes the difference.

Insurance is one thing I am thinking about. I am going to lose my good insurance in June, (Thanks Obama). Hard to tell what I will have after that. MRI would only cost me $25 now.

I'm no doctor, but considering your history and continuing headaches you should probably have an MRI every few years anyway.

For $25 I'd get one now and then decide how long to wait till the next one.

As for your doctors, you might be wise to seek out an AN specialist to follow up with once you have the MRI.

Presumably, you are able to get a CD with the MRI images that you can take to a neurosurgeon or neur-otologist for review.
3/15/18 12mm x 6mm x5mm
9/21/16 12mm x 7mm x 5mm
3/23/15 12mm x 5.5mm x 4mm
3/13/14 12mm x 6mm x 4mm
8/1/13 14mm x 5mm x 4mm (Expected)
1/22/13 12mm x 3mm (Gamma Knife)
10/10/12 11mm x 4mm x 5mm
4/4/12 9mm x 4mm x 3mm (Diagnosis)

If it was only that easy.  I would have to travel 2-3 hours to find a Neurosurgeon. I do get a CD with my MRI's.

Depends on the doc.

My neurotologist has you do a post op MRI annually for the 1st 5 years.  If they are all "clean", you don't get the next one for another 5 years.

Retrosig 5/31/07 Drs. Battista & Kazan (Hinsdale, Illinois)
Left AN 3.0 cm (1.5 cm @ diagnosis 6 wks prior) SSD. BAHA implant 3/4/08 (Dr. Battista) Divino 6/4/08  BP100 4/2010 BAHA 5 8/2015

I don't actually "make" trouble..just kind of attract it, fine tune it, and apply it in new and exciting ways

I don't know about anyone else, but I think I have more MRI CD's in my collection than I have music CD's.

After CK I went down to one MRI a year but it's only been two years so I don't know when that will change.
