Tinnitus
« on: March 24, 2014, 11:37:08 pm »
I know this is trivial but here is a riddle. Wondering if there is anyone else who has experienced increased tinnitus in our deaf ear with excessive noise exposure? I had my AN removed 13 months ago and am still dizzy and usually have a moderate level of tinnitus. I was using an electric chop saw the other day and found myself with only one earplug where usually I slip on noise protection muffs. Obviously I put the ear plug in my good ear and had a curious thought that at least there was one slight benefit to being SSD but I had terribly 'loud' tinnitus from then on throughout that evening and even now as I write it seems worse. What is up with that? Learned a lesson about covering that ear but would really like to know those dynamics. Anyone?

My tinnitus is also in my AN ear and while I am not SSD, I do have hearing loss.  If I am around loud noise even briefly, it will aggravate my tinnitus and it will become louder until it eventually settles down again.  I don't understand the dynamics either!
Diagnosed: June 2012, right side AN 1.8cm
June 2013: AN has grown to 2.4 cm.
Gamma Knife: Sept. 11, 2013 Toronto Western Hospital

In reading many posts from people with tinnitus, it seems rather universal that any loud environmental noises (e.g. noisy restaurants, loud music, loud engines, road noise in the car, etc.) results in greatly increased volume level of the tinnitus.  There probably is a scientific explanation for this .....

I carry my musicians' ear plug with me at all times and quickly put it in my only hearing ear whenever encountering such a situation.  It helps a great deal, but does not eliminate it.  It also takes my tinnitus a while to settle down after being in a noisy environment.
