4th year MRI update
« on: October 07, 2015, 07:55:34 am »
I heard back from my surgeon's office yesterday and the hospital's tumor board gave me 2 options, see a gamma knife specialist now for a consult or wait one year for another scan to see if there is continued "progression" of the tumor remnant. The MRI showed no growth in the size of the tumor remnant on the facial nerve, but did change in appearance in the medial aspect as being more dense, it enhanced more than the previous year's scan. I took option number 2. The surgeon's opinion was do nothing now but as my original tumor was very cystic, I should get the GK  before it becomes cystic again. They did say I could move the next scan up to 6 or 9 months if I wanted to.

I think you said you chose wait and watch, which sounds reasonable as long as you are under doctor supervision and monitoring, which you are.  I wish you best of luck.  You might not remember but you answered a lot of my posts 2+ years back with very informative answers, and I really appreciated it.  I hope things work out well for you, I am sure they will.
Dx 2.6 cm Nov 2012, 35% hearing loss.  Grew to 3.5 cm Oct 2013.  Pre-op total hearing loss, left side tongue numb.  Translab Nov 2013 House Clinic.  Post-op no permanent facial or other issues.  Tongue much improved.  Great result!!

Thanks for your reply. I do remember your pre-op concerns and our exchanges. I could not cooperate completely with you as I had a colon surgery pending, that was Sept 2013. ( I did have stage 1 colon cancer and am waiting for 5 years clear of disease, just 3 more to go, to be released from follow up care.) I am glad you made the right decision and did well.
As for waiting on this development, I see no need for treatment on a tumor remnant that is not larger in size. If that fact changes, I will get a couple opinions in addition to what the Clinic tells me. Cleveland Clinic is one of three teaching hospitals in the country offering training in the Perfexion GK so they are reputable. Pittsburgh is close by so UPMC and Dr Lundsford is an option for an opinion and University Hospitals in Cleveland has a long term Acoustic Neuroma Treatment Program staffed by doctors trained at House and Barrow, they include CK as a treatment. Good luck
