Who is the culprit

Hi, Ladies and Gentleman of this beautiful community,

I started my AN journey in 2012 in Sydney, Australia. I am an old community member but did not check in the last 8/9 years. It might be out of frustration or other priorities. However, a question has always stuck in my head (I am sure, many of this forum have it). What is the reason or cause of this life-changing event ( I did not say disease)? I was diagnosed with AN at the age of 32, at that time that was already 4cm. So you may get an idea of what fun my journey was. I have been working in the telecommunications industry as a civil designer of Mobile base stations. I have to go to active sites sometimes, but in Australia, adequate safety measures are taken. I migrated to Australia in 2010, back home I did a similar job and safety awareness at that time was terrible if not absent.  I even did not know the safe distance while going near active RF antennas.

Research indicates, passing radiation through your head, that can cause it. Other reasons are unknown. I suspect my work back home was responsible for my AN. What is your reason of yours? May I know what you guys suspect or know about the culprit? I am just trying to make a list of reasons.

Hi tamim.horizon, and welcome back to the ANA Forums!

I don't know if we will ever fully know (this side of heaven) what caused our acoustic neuromas.  We can guess and hypothesize, but there is no way to trace the cause back.

However, with that said, I do believe that electromagnetic radiation can play a role in the development of acoustic neuromas in some people.  That is why I shudder every time I see a young person with Apple airpods in their ears.  There may be nothing to using them, but why take the chance of bluetooth or any other type of electomagnetic radiation entering your brain (if you can help it)?  That is the reason why I made sure that I can turn off the bluetooth in my hearing aids.  I don't need any additional radiation entering my brain.  There is already too many electromagnetic frequencies entering my head which I don't have any control over.

But whether it was the radiation which caused the AN in your brain or in mind, I don't know that there is any definitive way to determine that.  I just try to minimize my exposure to different kinds of radiation as much as possible.

I’m from Adelaide SA. Hello fellow Aussie.

All of my specialists agreed with each other that nobody knows how these start. These are treated as a random spontaneous growth.

I’m not happy with that answer, either.

Interested to know if you learn anything new.

Hi, My tumor was removed when I was 36.  I was diagnosed with an Acoustic Neuroma by my ENT but my surgeon found it to be a Facial Neuroma Tumor. I had hearing loss in my left ear when I was in first grade.  Every year they tested me at school and every year they retested me with others that had hearing issues.  One year they even had my parents take me to another city to be tested, results, significant hearing loss but no one said why! 

How much radiation does a child get exposed to causing significant hearing loss by age 6? I had regular dentist visits but that's it. Would be interesting to know what causes the tumors but I don't think I'll ever find out why!  Hope you do!  Jill

I have just heard that mutation to MHTFR gene can cause AN growth.
