Lipreading: Are online courses worth the cost?
« on: January 17, 2025, 10:14:17 am »
Hello, has anyone had experience with lipreading training? Since my AN surgery in 2019, I have 100% hearing in my left ear and 0% in my right ear with constant tinnitus that gets louder as the noises around me get louder. I currently do not have any sort of assistive device for hearing other than my old BOSE Hearphones, which have been helpful at times, but from what I understand, in a crowded environment with a lot of background noise, even expensive hearing aids don't help much. I'm thinking that learning lipreading could help in these situations. With a quick google search, it seems there are options for a subscription or app to learn at your own pace, or live courses. Anyone have experience with particular courses that you found to be helpful? Are online courses worth the cost? Are there resources for free or discounted courses?
Thanks!
Marya

Lipreading in crowded, noisy places is SUPER difficult.
It's important that the people you are communicating with know these things, which you may need to keep reminding them.

1. Get my attention. Use simple gestures like waving or tap me on the shoulder to get my attention.

2. Please face me when you talk to me. Lots of people rely on lipreading to some degree to understand.

3. Be patient. Don’t be afraid to repeat or rephrase and try something different.

(I've been SSD for 15 years and I STILL have to remind people to not whisper into my left ear...)
Lip reading IS NOT a perfect science. There are lots of videos out there of lip reading gone wrong.
While there's some info/apps on lipreading, full disclosure, none that I have tried.

Wishing you the best.

Ok, good to know, those are good suggestions. Thanks for the input, Marla!

I can relate, I still sometimes have to remind people who know me well that they're whispering into the wrong ear. My earrings with little symbols on them have been somewhat helpful, but I sometimes wish I had a more visible indicator. :-\
