Endoscopic approach - Dr. Field in Orlando, Florida
« on: February 23, 2007, 10:12:12 am »
I just spoke with Dr. Field's secretary, Terry West, regarding my case and yes, Dr. Field does fully endoscopic AN removal, including recurrences. In fact, he has just done one recurrence very recently and the woman has no facial paralysis whatsoever. Terry says that Dr. Field has done about 100 endoscopic AN removals, including those during his residency. He has been trained by Dr. Jho in Pittsburgh and he uses the same technoques, i.e., retrosigmoid and retromastoid. Terry does not have formal statistics re: facial nerve paralysis and hearing preservation but in the 3 years she has been there, she cannot recall a single patient with facial paralysis. Hearing preservation is possible but not guaranteed, obviously, that depends on a case. There is  an ENT, Dr. Brian Spector., who  assists during the surgery. I asked about hearing preservation in case anybody else is interested because I am totally deaf in my affected ear and it is not a consideration for me.

Dr. Field's website is not very informative and does not specifically state that he performs endoscopic AN removals even though he does. Here it is anyway: www.orlandoneurosurgery.com.  His patient coordianator is Terry West, you can e-mail her at
twest@orlandoneurosurgery.com  or call at 407-975-0200 ext 8027. She is a very nice and kind lady.

Since Dr. Field was trained by Dr. Jho and uses the same techniques, I am including Dr. Jho's website here because it is much more informative:  http://drjho.com/acoustic_neuroma_surgery.htm.

It aslo looks like Dr. Field works with all insurance companies. I know quite a few people are turned off by SBI's initial fees, so that might be important. I will not post anything here regarding SBI because I feel that we have a lot of info about it from people who have already gone there.

It will probably be a few weeks before my phone consult with Dr. Field, so if anybody wants me to ask him any specific questions regarding statistics, instruments or anything else, e-mail me.

Feel free to paste your list of questions here, as I will be seeing him on March 1st in person....Jersey girl fyi, he will take a couple of days reviewing your films before he calls you just so you know...I sent my films via cd overnight mail, and heard back from him in two days.

One thing I did ask specifically was did he just use the approaches he trained in at Pittsburgh and the answer was no..he is also tyring to learn innovative approaches...he is teaching and coordinating with Dr.s from all around the world this weekend..should be interesting to see the outcome as he is using my films in his presentation....a sort of...what would you do approach....

and by the way...endo is very prominant in INDIA....

Hi there 'Ceeceek'...

I am interested in the endoscopic method of AN removal should surgery be an eventual requirement for me. I would be most grateful if you could ask Dr Field if he is aware of any UK based neurosurgeons who specialise in the endo' method.

Regards

Derek
Residing UK. In 'watch & wait' since diagnosis in March 2002 with right side AN. Initially sized at 2.5cm and now self reduced to 1.3cm.
All symptoms have abated except impaired hearing on affected side which is not a problem for me.

Endo approach is big in S. Korea, Turkey and China. I also bumped into some Austrian papers about it. Paradoxically, it is not as big in US. I cannot even explain it.

Hi Dereck...sorry for delay in answering. I will certainly look into it as well as ask..seeing that he is doing a teaching seminar this weekend for doctors all over the world,,he must know someone in your neck of the woods...when I know I will be sure and post...in the meantime try the following searches...

Brain tumor removal via endoscopic approach
endoscopic tumor removal
endoscopic brain tumor removal

Dont just search using ANs..if a doctor can perform endo approach, he can do AN removal....so try to search under just brain tumor removal endoscopic...but you need to put it lots of different ways...like I would try, endoscopic brain tumor removal england or UK....let us know

depending on what your insurance covers, you can try germany and here as well...always willing to play host.

Hi 'Ceeceek'...

Have tried all permutations with 'Google' but unable to find any 'hits' re endoscopic AN removal within the UK.

Thanks for your kind offer to discuss same with Dr Field and I await the response.

Try St Marys hospital in London....Be assured though, I will be sure to ask, but in the meantime perhaps you can check with them, and attempt to alleve some of your fears etc.

For Derek,

Hope this works, if not give me your email and I will send it that way..try the brain and spine foundation...aka. www.brainandspine.org.uk
It provides and entire list of neuro centers all around the UK, I would just try and research each hospital to see if any perform Endo, in the meantime I will of course see if Dr. Fields can recommend someone....where are you located..the UK is somewhat of a big area...too bad you cant travel to India...they do lots of em.

Hi again 'Ceeceek'..

Many thanks for your swift responses which I greatly appreciate.

As stated, I have tried all permutations but no success tracking down a sutable UK establishment via the internet.

I actually reside in the north east of England close to the main local city of Newcastle upon Tyne.

I have e-mailed helpline@brainandspine.org.uk and St Marys Hospital, London with my relevant queries and I am presently awaiting responses. I will let you know the results of those queries and once again many thanks for your intention of raising my query with Dr Field.

Best regards.

Hi again 'Ceeceek'...

Firstlly from your personal perspective, I do hope that your consultation with Dr Field had a successful outcome for you.

As previously stated, I sent an email to helpline@brainandspine.org.uk asking if they were aware of any neuros within the UK who carried out excision of ANs via the fully endoscopic procedure.  I received a response today which indicated that they had consulted with a neuro in England and he was not aware of any of his colleagues within the UK who carried out this procedure.

I just wondered what response you had obtained from Dr Field on that same subject?

Best Regards

Derek
