Who put in your gold weight????
« on: April 27, 2007, 10:25:01 am »
After 3 years I'm thinking my eye is never going to be okay. I see my surgeon on Tuesday and want to ask about a gold weight. I know he can do it but I'm most concerned about the aesthetics. I want to look normal.  Should I ask for a referral to a plastic surgeon?

I do have an opthamologist that I see but he's quite young and frankly I don't think he is experienced enough. He's a nice guy but if it wasn't for this forum I never would have got my punctual plug or tried Restasis or known about Lacrilube. (which I lived on before the pp and Restasis.)

Thanks everyone.............

Hi (again) Pembo:  The doctor who did my weight is a 'reconstructive' surgeon - he also does skin grafting on cancer patients, 'makes ears' for children who were born with 'stubs', that kind of thing.  He's not considered a 'plastic surgeon' but a 'reconstructive surgeon'.    Hope that helps.  My otoneurologist & neurosurgeon referred me to him immediately after the surgery.   I also wasn't told about the plugs, restasis - learned about those on this site also !!!  Called my optomologist yesterday & I'll see him 5/14 re: plugs & I'll ask about the Restasis.
Best wishes Pembo,    Nancy

I had a gold weight put in my left eye after my second CSF leak surgery (about 1.5 months after my AN was removed). I had a general opthamologist put the weight in. In my case, it was a very simple procedure, I was awake for the most part, on some fun drugs and basically talked during the whole 20-30 minute process. They slit my eye lid open between the tissues of skin in the lid, placed the gold weight in and stiched me up.  You can tell there is a small bulge in my eye lid but that is ok since I can close my eye when I sleep. When I blink it doesn't move as quick as my other eye.

I have an appointment to see another opthamologist (specialist) as Shands hospital at the Univ of Florida next month. They are going to correct my double vision. At that time, I am hopeful that I can remove the black tape over my one side of my glasses and will be curious if people notice the gold weight in my eye. Right now when I take my glasses off and show my friends my double vision so far none of them have noticed the weight in my eye.

I hope you find a Dr that you feel comfortable with to help with your situation.

Pembo,

I had a gold weight put in about a month afetr my AN surgery.  It was done by my ophthalmologist as outpatient surgery.  It took about half an hour.

Its done under local anesthesia, and is about as painless as surgery can get.

If you look closely, you can see a slight thickening of the eyelid where the weight is inserted.  I would call it invisible to most folks.

It has done the job of letting my left eyelid work (almost) normally.

Pembo,

I had my platium weight put in 2 weeks after my AN surgery. My doctor wanted to put the platium in over the gold weight. He told me it was thinner and less noticable. The surgery was bascially the same as Wayne's experience. My eye does not blink but will close at night when I go to sleep and I  rarely us any eye drops anymore.

This forum has been a life saver. I found a web site for some moisture sunglass on here last week and they come in today. Can't wait to use them instead of the clear patches when working outside.

Good Luck

Hi Nancy,

I thought it was your post I got it off of. It was www.panoptx.com. I just got them in, so I'm not recommending them till I try them out.

Oh, yeah....  that was me !!!    I ended up getting the ones made by Harley-Davidson, same thing, but the H-D fit me better, tighter fit with the foam.   They keep the wind out,  but I'm not sure about helping with promoting moisture.    My eyes feel great with them - I wear them out all the time !!!!    Hope you enjoy them as much as I do !!!!   All the best Ellis,  Nancy

Nancy,

I like the way the panoptx sunglasses fit but I got the day/night lense. They let in too much light. I called them back today and they told me that transition lense do not get as dark as regular sunglass lense. I plan to send them back tomorrow and exchange for just the regular sunglass lense. Thats the bad thing about ordering, you need to try them on first. O WELL!

I hear ya Ellis.  I did get the darkest lenses they had because I knew I'd be using them mainly during the day, & in Florida, the 'sunshine state' well, need I say more ?   Good luck with the exchange, glad to hear they fit well, I was hoping they would.
Okay,  always good thoughts my friend,   Nancy
