AN secondary tumor elsewhere
« on: July 25, 2008, 06:34:44 am »
Has anyone heard that if you have a AN, that there is a tumor elsewhere in the body? Just something I heard of the other day.

Thanks  Mark

Mark,
I've haven't heard that, and I doubt that it is true.  Perhaps the person saying that is confused about brain tumors in general.  AN is a primary tumor, meaning that it is not a secondary tumor that spread from some other location.  Some brain tumor patients have cancer somewhere else in their body that has metastasized and spread the cancer to the brain as a secondary tumor.  Since AN is a primary and non-cancerous tumor, it would not be related to any potential tumors elsewhere in the body, with the exception of NF2.  NF2 patients can have tumors or nodules elsewhere in the body.  Thankfully, NF2 is very rare even amoung AN patients.
Regards,
  Rob

Maybe they were talking about NF2 which can sometimes cause tumors on your spine?

I have always thought it was weird that I had a benign tumor on the bottom of my right foot and a benign tumor sitting in my left ear.  I guess that covers it from the bottom all the way up to the top!  My mother has had three different kinds of cancer (melanoma, uterine, and breast) so go figure.  She is 20 years out I am happy to say.  Never know what the body is going to come up with.  I certainly wasn't expecting to get an AN, and I bet all of you weren't either.

We can bat this premise around all day and get nowhere because there isn't any credible scientific evidence to support the theory that having an Acoustic Neuroma somehow indicates there is a tumor elsewhere in your body.  I had an AN - and no other tumors.  My wife recently had a benign neuroma in her foot that was surgically removed.  She does not and never had an AN.  Go figure.

The only plausible conclusion one can arrive at is that the stated hypothesis is simply wrong.  Works for me.

4.5 cm AN diagnosed 5/06.  Retrosigmoid surgery 6/06.  Follow-up FSR completed 10/06.  Tumor shrinkage & necrosis noted on last MRI.  Life is good.

Life is not the way it's supposed to be. It's the way it is.  The way we cope with it is what makes the difference.

I have never heard of this and, obviously, I hope it's wrong information  ::)

My daughter had neuromas on the nerves of her toes... she had to have them removed.
I am pretty sure they are the same type of tumor as the Acoustic Neuromas.
