I think it is very likely that Steve has bits and pieces of various colors left over from all of these projects. A patchwork hat may be just what the doctor ordered, so to speak.

There you go. Around here, those yarn scraps would be made into little yarn boy and girl dolls for the fourth grade Civil War Day. I'll hunt up a picture later. Meantime here are some other fun options:

A tie for Steve! http://www.knitpicks.com/Mens+Bias+Knit+Tie+Pattern_PD50604220.html
or maybe this goofy one? http://www.knitpicks.com/Bow+Tie+Pattern_PD50563220.html

or perhaps for all of the wine lovers around here: http://www.knitpicks.com/patterns/Wine_Cozy__D31207223.html

My husband and I volunteer at Civil War Day every May. It is the culmination of the fourth grade Missouri History class. It's more or less a Civil War field day with all kinds of activities. I run a sutlery, a kind of general store that followed the camps. The kids are given the monthly allowance of $13 monthly pay for a Union private, then go shopping in the sutlery. It's great fun.

Here are the yarn dolls I mentioned:

I also make haversacks for carrying their gear:

Steve -

the hat looks fantastic!  I'll bet Sara can't wait to receive it.

Now - about the recipient of the red one - when are you going to tell us?  The suspense is killing me!
