oh boy...this is gonna take some work...first walk in lots of snow since surgery...it sure was challenging..good thing I had on my Steve original hat on...it worked its magic!!! kept me standing up

There must have been some magic in that old knit had you found....becouse when you placed in on your head you didn't stumble around.... ;D

sorry to hear you are having trouble balancing in the snow.  I never had that problem, so I didn't know it was a possibility for some.  Please be careful out there.

And thank goodness you have a Steve hat to keep your head warm.  I love my Steve hat - I wear it most of the winter!

It's that old vision perception thing ..... snow alters one's visual frame of reference ..... similar to walking on uneven surfaces.  I have to be really, really careful in the snow or ice, because one misstep can cause me to lose my balance and I do not have enough time to figure out where "up" is.

We had our first snow fall yesterday in Toronto. This morning when I left for work it was still dark and found it difficult to walk in the snow. It felt weird, like I was in a boat. Need to definitely be more careful this winter.

Walking on uneven surfaces that give under your feet can make you dizzy.  I had this with soft sand, and so, it would be the same with snow or soft dirt or uneven ground sometimes.  Mine isn't quite as bad as it was, but I can still have effects of that.  So BE CAREFUL!!  Don't want to hear about broken bones.

I know I have the same issue.  Even more, driving in snow, esp in the dark.  Good thing my husband was driving!  When I went to my follow-up appointment in May the Dr. told me to continue to challenge myself and it would help the balance issues (i.e. looking out and around while walking, etc.).  Getting through this first winter may be just what the Dr. ordered.  Be safe and give yourself lots of time.  And keep that magic hat on your noggin ;).

driving in the snow or at night is fine with me...looking into the distance and scanning from side to side is what I'm trained  to do...it will be good balance training. Now I"m anxious to try walking on those soft sandy beaches in Mexico..

Ooooooooo, now you're talking!!  You should be just fine on the beach.  The first time I walked on the sand on a North Carolina beach shortly after surgery, I was a bit thrown off by the ebbing and flowing of the waves.  However, I soon relaxed and realized that even if I fell I would most likely not be hurt in the soft sand.  I did learn to focus on either the sand or farther out in the water to keep from staggering ..... still did that this past October when we were there again.

Yes, walking in snow is still very challenging - I have to watch each step.  It gets exponentially worse (and funnier) when the snow is falling.  Something about all those snowflakes just confuses the heck out of my brain.  Be careful - but have fun

Any one have big problems w/ shoveling????
I have found that i just can not shovel....I am o.k. while i am doing it...its the after effects that get me.
I come inside n i am extremly nauseous..the whole something draining from the back left side of my tongue......woke up n the middle of the night my ear felt like someone jackhammered there overnight...this mourn i awake w/ great head pain.I was literally walking like like a crab sideways ???
So....here i sit wanted to go to the Christmas Tree Shop....between walking side ward n the bobblehead...i am staying put for the day.Tomorow is another....theres no rush......right???No Rush!!!! ;D
Oh yeh...n the tinnitus has taken on Christmas caroling!

I'm the shoveler in the family, but I thankfully haven't encountered this problem.  It sounds horrible  :( 

Don't you have someone who can shovel for you?  Spouse, child, neighbor?

I took a walk on the snow and ice in the single digit weather this morning with my fourth graders.  We had to walk very fast too keep from freezing.  My only balance problem was one little hill of snow that I didn't realize was higher, but I recovered quickly without falling.  I was wearing my original "Steve" hat.  Couldn't go out without a hat today.
