Baha and word recognition????
« on: April 08, 2010, 12:28:31 pm »
Hello to all!

Quick question: my audiologist told me that in order to have a BAHA device you need to have at least 50% word recognition in the AN ear...I think it is a bit strange since some people with SSD have BAHA device. I'm almost SSD in my AN ear. I have a small AN and I have been in the WandW mode for the past year. This forum is wonderfull! It is my first post ever and I feel so much less alone reading you fantastic people!  :D

You misunderstood. You need a 50% voice recognition in the non AN ear and SSD on the AN side.

Welcome to the Forum  ;D

Ditto what Sam said.

In fact, if you had at least 50% word recognition in the AN ear, I think you'd be ineligible for a BAHA.

I'm SSD in my "BAHA ear" and 100% perfect in my "good ear".

I started out with a BAHA Divino almost 2 years and just upgraded to a BP100.  IMO, you can't go wrong with a BAHA.

Have you tried the demo yet?

I don't actually "make" trouble..just kind of attract it, fine tune it, and apply it in new and exciting ways

Hello again,

no I didn't try the demo because my audiologist said I need to have 50% word recognition...from what I have been reading it's I bit weird that she would think that...but I guess it is very new to her. All the AN stuff was also very knew and scary to her (well same to me)! I didn't receve any treatment yet (I guess the new Ottawa Cyberknife will be a good option if the AN grows) so I don't know if I'm eligible for BAHA....Canadian rules...

I don't know about Canadian rules, but if you go to the Cochlear website (www.cochlearamericas.com) and click on "Find a Clinic" you'll find places in Canada where they do both BAHAs and Cochlear Implants.

If you ever get a chance to try the BAHA demo, don't pass it up.  I was blown away by it; most are.

Hello,

I met with my ENT on Wednesday and I did find out that my audiologist was wrong. I'm a good candidate for the BAHA  ;D But he want me to try the Cross system first and maybe transear or another thing...to make sure that no other non invasive solution can help. From what I read from this forum...I BAHA seems so much better and I can't wait to try the demo! My expectation are not to high...I just want to be able to hear people talking to me on my left side without turning my head and saying "I can't hear you" all the time! I guess I have to try the cross thing and maybe transear and than I will see.

How is the transear compare to the BAHA, does anybody try both and can tell which one they prefer? I know that it is a personal choice at one point.

Thank you very much!

Valerie -

this is excellent news.

We've only had one or two forumites who tried both the TransEar and the BAHA.  If I recall correctly, they both had a TransEar and then opted for a BAHA.  I think they both liked the BAHA better.

If you do get a BAHA, you will definitely be able to hear people talking on your "bad" side and you won't have to turn your body to hear them. That's just one of the beautiful things about it  ;D

Do you have shelly as your audiologist?  She is the one who usually works with Schramm.

Hi Jo,

Yes I have Shelly. Like you mention previously Dr. Schramm want me to try other "non invasive" earring aid before he "authorizes" a BAHA. I am very curious to try the demo  :o and see how I can hear from my bad side. I guess it will take a couple of months before I'm at that point!

yep, he had me try the CROS which I didnt like...Transear wasnt available at that time...I decided on a Baha before I even had my surgery. when the time came, I handed the Cros back, demoed the Baha and was hooked.  You may like the transear.  My VA plan covered my Baha but not the conventional ones...henceforth, the demand for a baha...I love my BP100,  I dont know if shelley has the BP100 for the demo...I got to use an old divino and even older intenso...
