Question about symptoms
« on: May 24, 2006, 03:00:14 pm »
I am wondering if anyone with AN ever experienced intermittant tingling in their ear canal.  I have tinnitus, a blocked sensation in my ear and also tingling which only last for a few seconds.  I have read about facial tingling.  Can AN cause ear tingling as well?

I have a sensation sometimes...not sure I'd call it tingling...I do find myself wanting to scratch inside my outer ear canal though.  Like there's a hair or something tickling in there.  I also very infrequently get searing pain in my ear for a few seconds.

Thanks for the reponses and the warm welcome.  I am going to an ENT today to have it checked out.  Someone said that it could be TMJ but am not convinced that is what it is.  I have looked everywhere on the internet and can not find anything about what "tingling" in the ear canal means.  It is hard to describe....kind of like if you got a chill that ran through your ear.  It only lasts for a couple seconds and seems to be worse when I talk, so maybe it is TMJ.  It is just that I have those other symptoms...blocked ear, ringing....so I came across this site and thought I might inquire.  My ears have always bothered me when I fly...If I don't take sudafed and afrin before I fly I feel like my ears are going to explode and the pain radiates down my neck.  I just want to figure out what this is before I go away this weekend(I am flying).

Any other reponses would be appreciated!!

I have tmj and it causes a popping in your jaw and IMO can cause the tinnitus in your ear.  I've never noticed a correlation between the itching feeling and my jaw popping.  Flying never bothered me until I flew with the AN.
Good luck on getting your answers!

Welcome from me also hark.....I had an itchy, tingling sensation before my surgery for years and I continually tried to clear stuffiness by popping my jaw to relieve the pressure.  Most common problem I had though was the itchiness inside the ear.  I coninually tugged and scratched at my ear similar to a toddler who has an earache.  I don't have the itchiness anymore but the tinnitus is a little more annoying, especially since i don't have an acoustic nerve and yet loud noises (trains) or a lot of noise (malls) really agrevate the tinnitus.  Oh well, can have everything perfect I suppose.

I also get a sharp pain, like gennysmom wrote about.  Once in awhile, not constant.  Also sometimes it itches inside or feels like it does..

You want to know something weird?

My new puppy likes to lick my AN ear, not my good ear.  Wonder what thats all about?  I take alot of care and clean my ears everyday, so not sure whats the big attraction.

Hi Hark:

Welcome .....( I do hope you don't have an AN)  My biggest complaint before surgery was the fullness in my left ear.  The day I informed my drs. what my choice of treatment would be I had one final question:  If I have this out will the fullness feeling be gone for good?  They said yes, after the swelling goes down which could take a month or more.  They were right, that awful feeling is gone.

Tinnitus was there before surgery in many forms.  Crickets, the electric sound many people have referred to and high pitched sounds were common.  Now it is one annoying tone that I have learned to live with.

Hopefully you don't have AN - it could be due to a number of less serious things. Even if you do have AN, i'm quite sure there is nothing wrong with flyling.  When i was diagnosed with a 3.5cm tumor, I wanted to travel interstate to get some opinions and all specialists said flying was fine and wouldn't affect the AN at all.

Good luck. Let us know how you go.

 Hi Denise!

I just read a news article several weeks ago about a man's dog which did the same thing. Guess; The man had a brain tumor. Not an AN however.
Re The stabbing pains, I have them and asked a couple different kinds of Drs; Their response; "Etiology unknown".
I hope you enjoy your lil' ear washer! - smile -

Denise - I suppose your pup knows there is something there that shouldn't be. If you have ever noticed a dog logs to lick any open wounds or sores to help them heal. Your pup is trying to help you in his own little way :) How sweet!

For years I've been complaining of itching in my AN ear (not knowing the AN was there). I explained it to everyone by comparing it to someone with allergies that have itchy watery eyes... except mine was in the ear.

I was diagnosed with TMJ a couple of months before my first AN surgery anniversary.  My jaw pops, I have searing pain on occassion and my jaw does not line up the way is is supposed to.  I did not have it prior to my surgery.  I still have fullness in my AN side of my head.  I thought it was the "fat", but that spot is concave now so it must have disapated.  Too bad it doesn't disapate in the rest of the body!  Both of my Pugs like to lick the AN ear.  Maybe because I can't feel it or hear it!  They leave the other ear completely alone.
