Father's surgery in progress

Hey Everyone!

I wanted to post this yesterday but the site was down.  Today is the day my father went into surgery (7:30am this morning).  He's at Tufts with Dr. Heilman and they said surgery should last about 8 hours. 

Father's tumor size is 3.5cm and the Doc's seem confident it'll be removed and will try best as possible to preserve facial nerves.

Anyways, I'm very ANXIOUS right now and will hope for the best.  I'll have an update later on the day!

Somehow I missed your original posts in August.  Just want to say now that thoughts and prayers are with you as you await the completion of your father's surgery.  It is tough to be the family member waiting.  Your dad will awaken not even realizing how long he was in surgery, but you are painfully aware of the hours going by.

These first 24 hours will be rough for him and he may react totally differently than he is normally so do not be dismayed if he says things that upset you.  In a few days, he should be back to his usual self ..... at least personality-wise.

Many thoughts and prayers and do let us know how he is doing.

we know your dad is in good hands at Tufts (Helga is terrific example) and will look for the updates.  It may be cold outside here in Boston, but know that the warmth here on the forums is never-ending and we're cheering you on!

hope things went well for your father today and that he has a swift and uneventful recovery.

Remember that the first few days of recovery are the toughest.  After that patients usually make progress each and every day.  Sometimes recovery involves taking two steps forward and one step back, but that's normal.

As a family member/caregiver make sure you take care of yourself as well as your dad.  AN surgery is stressful for everyone - not just the patient.

Please keep us posted on your father's progress.

Hey Everyone!

Thanks for the support!  Surgery went successful and he is now recovering.  Dr. Heilman was able to remove the entire tumor and as of now, signs of facial movement is very good.  He said there was very little bleeding during the surgery and he should be out in 4-5 days.  I'm glad we chose him!

This is such a huge relief.  I just can't wait till he fully recovers and is able to go on normal again.

Thanks for the great news!   It WILL take time to get back to "normal", so easy, slow is the name of the game when he comes home.
Our advice: walking, resting, eating, drinking, napping, and watch the bending over (completely over) so as not to bring on post op headaches (if he doesn't already have them....)

My husband Mark had surgery 6 months ago for a 3.0cm AN, Dr. Heilman at Tufts did the surgery and I cannot praise him and his team enough. Your Father is in good hands. My husband had a very positive outcome and is doing very well.  

I am glad the surgery went well and the healing process takes time.

   Sorry this is so late, but first the site was down and then I had to travel for my 3 week check-up.  I'm glad to hear the good news that surgery went well.  I hope that your father's recovery is going just as well.
