Hi Niels .....
So glad you are flying to House for your surgery in August.
My surgery at House was just one year ago (May 11, 2011) and I flew across the entire United States so it was a loooooong flight, as well. My husband and I also flew out to LA early, but 4 days before for a family reunion/vacation. We stayed at Seton Hall the entire time ..... with the exception of one overnight stay 6 days post-op in a lovely villa at Newport Beach, CA. Because I was released from St. Vincent's on a Sunday (surgery the Wednesday before), I had to pick up my meds at the Clinic Pharmacy on Monday. Other than that, the only time I went to the Clinic post-op was on Day 8 for stitch removal by Dr. Friedman and an appointment with Dr. Stefan (the internist) to check my general health and answer any questions. All was well so no further visits needed.
Regarding staying at Seton Hall: it is a very basic facility but clean, comfortable and quiet (and inexpensive) ..... plus you have much support from other patients and their families going through the same thing. (We met some lovely people!) Staying at a nice hotel for a few days at the end of your stay should not be a problem, unless you are going a considerable distance away from the area. If you are renting a car, it should not be a problem at all. If not, you will want to be close enough to get back to the hospital quickly for any unexpected emergency.
Good idea to fly business class ..... especially the return trip. You will need to get up and walk every hour to an hour and a half and exercise your legs inbetween. The extra leg room is not a luxury at that point.
Best thoughts.
