New York Metro members - A Rock Legend coming to New York.
« on: September 06, 2012, 08:29:44 pm »
I just found out yesterday that ZZ Top will be signing their new album on Sept. 11th at J&R Music world.  They are at the Beacon on the 12th.  Dusty Hill is possibly the most famous person who had an Acoustic Neuroma.  He is the bassist in the band.  I always like good examples of people who have been through this and faired well.  This appearance is explained right on their website.   http://www.zztop.com/
If we could only get him to a local meeting.  ;)
Diag: 08/11/2009 Left side
AN: 0.6cm.  65% Hearing loss, tinnitus, fullness, minor motion issues.
hearing loss over 25+ years.  MRI in 2000 showed nothing.
Optical Atrophy from infantcy
Watch and Wait.
As of 2017 I am on a 2 year MRI frequency.

Good point.  It's reported that he's worth $55 Million so maybe he could spare a couple of bucks.  I was thinking more of a benefit concert so we all have dreams.

He might be a great guest speaker at the ANA Symposium - after this one sponsored by HEI.

I keep telling Phyl to push for a Symposium on the East Coast!

Actually I thought about that too.  That's far enough away that maybe he could be there.  Then again they will release their new album on the 11th.  I'm guessing they will be touring for a while.  I'm not sure where he lives now.  If he lives in California and he's not going to be on tour anything is possible.
I won't be at J & R but I'm hoping some other folks will go and introduce themselves to him as fellow A.N.ers.  He may even be unaware of our organization.  He may have moved on.  Some people deal with it and get on with life you know.

Oh forgot to add, an east coast symposium would be great.  Not sure if I will make the L.A. one.  I'd like to go but there are other considerations.

Dear G Man,

Awesome man! I am a fan! Makes you wonder though, how will he manage to do that awesome sway with the guitar like he does?

Mike
That's the point.  Tonight they are playing the Beacon in NYC.  This is one of the best places I know to see a show in New York.  Every seat in the place is a good one.  Dusty is just chugging on.
What most people don't realize is that the majority of the old rockers already have SERIOUS hearing loss.  Back then nobody wore hearing protection.  So maybe the impact for Dusty isn't as bad as we would tend think.  I'm not aware of the details of Dusty's situation.  Maybe he didn't lose much hearing.
Everything I've heard from anyone credible about cell phones has been "They don't cause cancer".  Then again we don't always have all the data.  I feel that more people are going to go deaf from those ear plugs in their ears all day with the music blasting thou.
I'm Dusty's friend on Facebook.  I did message him about his A.N. and there was no response.  I get the impression that Dusty's wife runs the web page.  She posts pictures of what's going on.

A minor update to this story.  I did get a response from Dusty on FB.  Even though it was only a 1 liner thanking me and giving the old "Hang in there", I thought it was great that he acknowledged my message.
Then I did respond to tell him about the symposium.
I think we are all trying to do a couple of different things here in the ANA.
First and foremost is learn things we can use in our quest to make the best of it.
I think another thing we do is try to put as much positive energy into it as we can.  Anyone you ask who knows me would probably say that I'm not the most positive person on the planet.  BUT even I have learned something from all you ANA'ers out there.  Positive energy is a very important part of this and there is no such thing as too much of it.  So I like to look to people who have been successful with it.  I can't think of anyone who is more successful than Dusty.

Dusty responded again.  He doesn't know where he will be then.  At least we are in his thoughts.  That can't be a bad thing.  Let's see what happens.
