2-year post-GK MRI
« on: May 08, 2015, 09:17:25 pm »
Hi All,

My 2-year post-GK MRI today showed very encouraging results. MY AN tumor, which used to show as all white, now appears mostly grayish, and is noticeably smaller.  The estimated size had been 1.8cm on 4/17/13 before GK, 2.2cm six months after GK, 1.7 cm 1-year after GK, and 1.6 cm 2-years after GK.  Another annual MRI was recommended for next year, but if the results are consistent, then MRIs every other year for awhile.  The positive results confirmed how I've been feeling over the past year or so, which is pretty much symptom-free.  I've adjusted to the tinnitus and diminished hearing on my AN side (~50%).  No on-going headaches, balance problems, dizziness, wonkiness, head-fullness, etc.

So, it appears I'm one of the fortunate ones to weather the AN storm to move on to a life of normalcy. Trust me, I'll count my blessings each and every day that I remain symptom-free.

My prayers will continue for everyone struggling with their own AN journey.
(PM me if I can help with any GK-related questions.)

Best wishes,
Petrone

So happy to hear these positive results!  I am giving gamma knife some serious consideration if it
comes to that.  I am remaining on watch and wait until my next MRI in four months.  If it shows any growth, I will need to decide on treatment.  Your remaks about gamma knife are encouraging.

Hi.. I was recently diagnosed with AN. I have been told by my neurologist that SRS would be the choice of treatment. That 1 gigantic dose of radiation. I am scared about it all!  There have been so many posts I have read that are mostly discouraging. The more I read about the side effects , even years later, the more freaked out I get.! The symptoms come back, dizziness nausea, balance issues, and more hearing loss....I have so may questions. ...UGH. I'm glad to hear your positive outcome....maybe there is quality of life post trearment.....

Dmay027,

There absolutely is quality of life after treatment whether through micro surgery or radiation.  The more time you spend reading posts on this forum you will find many who have had excellent outcomes from treatment. Some of these people come back occasionally to post positive news, while others do not come back here as they are busy getting on with their lives.  This forum can be a source of good news and also a support line for those who are having a more difficult time.  Please don't assume that everyone has ongoing issues or that everyone has problems that develop again years later.  We all have a different story.

I well remember the fear I felt when initially diagnosed, but the more you learn, read, and speak to people about this Alien, the better you are able to put it in perspective.  The one most important thing you can learn here is that finding a specialist who is greatly experienced in treating AN's is critical to helping ensure a good outcome.  Please make sure you have more than one opinion and that you know the experience of your specialist.

Cathie.

Good to hear that you're doing well!  I went for my 1-1/2 yr check-up & learned that my AN has contintued to shrink also.

Concur w/ Cathie - I've learned so much from this forum.
8/2/13 - diagnosed 1.9 CM right side; 1/13/14 - MRI it got bigger!; 2/10/14 - GK; 8/18/14 - shrinking; 8/17/15 - still shrinking, reduced symptoms
