Suggestions for Surgey in atlanta
« on: May 06, 2019, 12:25:47 pm »
My wife was diagnosed with AN and they said the largest size is 27mm and as she is young and we should do the surgery. They do not recommend radiation as it is too big and surgery is almost the only option. They said the surgery is two person team up and will be whole day. next day ICU and about 5 days in hospital. She will lose hearing complete on the left ear but there is some equipment to help hearing.

I have no idea what to expect. Should I look for second opinion? I do struggle to get appointment with specialists in Atlanta in reasonable time, its always 2-3 months away) and the Doc said do not wait and complete the surgery ASAP. There may be complications and also told me to keep on eye on her and take her to emergency if she is acting abnormal (to release pressure from spinal fluid (is this true)).

Any doctors you suggest in Atlanta?

I have appointment with Neurosurgeon this week.

Any suggestions/advise I need to look for? How do we inform our managers at work?

Thank you in advance.

Hi, sorry to hear about your wife’s situation. If you are in a position to travel, you might want to check out Vanderbilt. They are a major treatment center for acoustic neuromas and do many of these surgeries. It is not a long drive from Atlanta and worth the effort to find higly experienced surgeons.

Thank you so much for the reply. She does not want to travel for surgery.

I was wondering if your wife had her surgery? Did you check out Emory? Yes, the approach for surgery is a two surgeon approach - usually an ENT and a neurosurgeon work together to remove the tumor. One night in ICU and then 4 days in a regular room is about right, depending on the patient. I wish you good luck.
3.2 cm AN (right side) diagnosed in 10/2018
Only symptom: mild hearing loss
TransLab surgery 1/2/19 @MUSC w/ Drs. Lambert & Patel. Sliver of tumor left.
Rt. Side facial paralysis (nerve stretched), tumor was "sticky", SSD, getting platinum weight implant 6/13/19
Doing fine otherwise!
