query re radiotherapy and thyroid
« on: January 08, 2025, 06:58:05 pm »
Hi all does anyone know (and I will be asking my specialist at my next appt) if Radiotherapy can affect the thyroid? Or cause dry mouth and eyes over time? I have subclinical hypothyroidism now and yesterday my optometrist mentioned that radiation had affected his wife's thyroid.

Michelle,  I am not quite the reader you are but I have come across nothing linking the two.  I have 15 months personal experience and 22 years watching my son. Nothing so far.  Good luck and I hope you feel better.

Thanks Dan! Yes, I wasnt sure because in my case the thyroid thing (no medication) was caused by Covid two years ago.  I am doing great! Next MRI and audiology coming up- not my best haha but no complaints so far. I did get deep ear pain lately again- ongoing since diagnosis years ago - but discovered that just 1 mg diazepam at night totally stops all nerve pain. So does full spectrum CBD and the next day I feel wonderful. I dont need this often but it def is effective.

Michelle,

i had stereotactic radiation for my acoustic neuroma 10 years ago, I recently (within last 5 years)
had a minor stroke caused by a dangerous calcium level.  Research has shown that radiation treatment of the head and neck area can cause a tumor growth on the parathyroid glands in the neck area responsible for an increase in your blood calcium score.  In my case, the doctors missed my 75 times normal level of calcium that caused my minor stroke.  I will tell you that I have taken Synthroid for my low thyroid condition since i was in my 20’s…. the radiation has not affected my levels at all.  I still have lasting effects from my stroke, although it has not stopped me from any physical activities.

Thank you for sharing Dominic. I am sorry you experienced that. I have a fasting metabolic bone test every year to check for bone loss (as I do not want any more xrays ) and my parathyroid has been in range- however my calcium is low and I have subclinical hypo though this could also relate to low estrogen at 64. I was advised not to take calcium supplements I do take a low D3 k2 every day for years - I am a big believer in K2 (MK7) re calcium to bones not arteries. After reading your post I am going to request an ultrasound of thyroid I think. .
