Jim -
don't worry about the hijacking, I do it all the time
And you are certainly not meddling - just providing your input.
In general it
is hard to raise children in the environment and the world you so aptly describe, and in the case of my children, there are a few additional factors which make it more difficult. I do find that at times they are too materialistic - especially my daughter - and I am doing my best to set a good example for them. It's not always easy since it's a whole new world since I was a child
I do regularly instill a sense of "giving back" in them by making sure they are aware of the good causes that I support, plus I have decided that within the next year we will all be volunteering our time on some level to help those less fortunate than we are.
Thanks for the good advice. Although I'm not a fan of Hilary Clinton's, I agree with her assessment that it takes a village to raise a child.
