Georgetown CK
« on: November 20, 2007, 10:06:47 am »
I had the consults last week at Georgetown for CK.  Everything went well with the exception that I caught a head cold the day before going.  They reported having done 40-50 ANs via CK since inception.  I was told the one side effect that almost everyone notes is fatigue.  Of course, we reviewed the other side effects also but I'm hoping for the best outcome with minimal side effects.  With the cold, getting fitted for the mask actually felt great to my sinuses because it's warm when first applied.  Once stretched over my face, she pulled a bit of it away from my nose which helped tremendously.  The CT scan was done with the mask on after it had dried.  Let's just say, there is no way my head is going to move.  They offer Ativan prior to treatments.  They also don't routinely use steroids in their protocol reserving that for later if problems occur.
I have a question for those that have been through radiosurgery.  On the flight back, my AN ear stopped up a good bit taking what seemed like forever to pop and normalize.  I realize this was likely due to congestion, but I'm concerned about flying after radiation.  Has anyone had problems with this?
Thanks
Sandra

Sandra,

There should be minimal effect on flying after radiosurgery. The sinus congestion is a more uncomfortable and risky scenario for getting on an airplane  ;)

Thanks.  Glad to hear it.  Now that this cold is dissipating, I'm back to hearing the ringing tinnitis (thank goodness at a lower pitch) and that odd clicking noise.  Yesterday, while sitting still, I actually felt something shift in there.  Talk about an odd feeling.

Have a great Thanksgiving!!!

I just returned from Stanford for CK, and managed to get a bug on the way home.  I agree, the treatments didn't seem to affect my flying, just the sinus congestion.  I've had some bad headaches for a couple days, but those are subsiding now, and I feel those are part of my bug, not the treatment.  I'm blaming the Decadron for catching the cold  :-\.

No regrets with CK, and I just wanted to wish you well with your treatment.  Have a good Thanksgiving!

Hi Sandra,
Glad things went well for you at Georgetown.  Hope your cold is getting better too.  I didn't fly after treatment, but the immediate effects really did seem minimal.  I drove 400 miles the next day with no problem except being really tired at the end of the trip.  Just curious... are they giving you 3 or 5 days of treatment?

2 cm right-side AN, diagnosed July 2006
Cyberknife at Georgetown Univ. Hospital, Aug 2007
Swelled to 2.5 cm and darkened thru center on latest MRI's, Dec 2007 and Mar 2008
Shrinking! back to 2 cm, Aug 2008
Still shrinking (a little), I think about 1.7 cm now, Aug 2009

Relieved to hear you are doing well.  We're considering driving but not sure yet.  Also I'm not sure if 3 or 5.  We discussed the different protocols.  Evidently there are more outcomes stats available for the 5 treatment protocol.  I'll let you know what they say.  Hopefully I'll hear from them soon.  Take care.
