Going in for second surgery 3 months after the 1st one
« on: February 12, 2010, 02:17:38 am »
Guys,

Please keep my brother in your thoughts this coming Monday, 15th February, he has to undergo another microsurgery on his AN as the first one did not manage to take out enough tumor for the rest to be treated with GK/CK.

This time, he will be operated in Hannover, Germany, by Dr. Samii Sr (thanks Hrissy for your advice and recommendation), we will be in Hannover tomorrow, he is admitted in the Hospital on Sunday and early Monday, it will be "all guns ablaze!".

We were looking for an extra good specialist this time, we had to pay upfront 50 thousand EUR from our own pocket, but the most important thing is to give him the best possible medical treatment especially as he has gone through the mill already once. The first time round, he'd stayed in the hospital for 1 month; developed hydrocephalus and had a shunt implanted; had trouble swalloing and talking; right arm tremor; terrible shoulder pain, the lot. He's fairly recovered now, but after such a gruelling experience, he is very apprehensive of this new surgery.

Please have us in your thoughts on Monday. Thanks.
My brother'a AN was 3.9cm at diagnosis Sept 09; 3.5cm after a suboccipital retrosigmond, done in Tuzla, Bosnia in Oct 09; second surgery performed at INI Hannover Feb 2010, tumor classed as T4b (the largest: 5cm plus). All tumor was taken out by Dr Samii Sr, facial nerve preserved (mild paresis),SSD

Not only do I wish the best possible outcome for your brother,Edin,on his second AN surgery, but he'll be in my prayers, too.

Azra -

prayers to your brother, Edin.

He is lucky to have a sibling like you.  It's obvious you are very concerned about him and a big help in his AN Journey.

I know from experience how vital family can be during surgery and recovery.

Hrissy is very special to us here on the Forum; you couldn't have found a better "life-saviour".

Please keep us updated.

Best,

Hi guys

just a quick update: my brother was operated on on Monday (retro-sigmond again), Dr Samii says he took all of the tumor out (and it was classed as T4b, the largest size AN) and the facial nerve is preserved, he only has a slight facial paresis, nothing serious, and he can close his eye no problem. His issues with swallowing are back though there is nothing wrong with his throat anatomically so it is to do with the nerves; he is still in ICU due to high pressure and a contusion in the place of a tumor (a bruise) as a result of the surgical manipulation but they are not worried only monitoring just in case. He is already having some physio and logopedic therapy while in ICU though very little but it is still encouraging. He will be tube fed but at the same time they will try and get him to eat normally as the tube they put in is very thin, for this very reason.
Will keep you posted, thank you all for your replies.
hugs

Azra ~

Thanks for the update.  I'm thrilled to learn that Edin had a successful surgery with only minimal problems - and none permanent.  I'm sure he'll recover nicely and of course, you both have our collective prayers and support.

Thanks everyone!

A new issue cropped up today, 5 days after the surgery. Today, he can not close his AN affected eye properly even though there were no problems with that prior to surgery or immediately after the surgery, until today. Has anybody had experience with this? Or should I start a new thread about the eye issue?

Thanks

Hi Azra

I'm sorry to hear of this new issue..... I did find this thread in the "Eye Issue" forum, done by ToddH, who I had the honour of meeting at the ANA Symposium in Chicago last year.  He is a professional with some terrific thoughts on this (there are many other terrific discussions in the "Eye Issues" forum as well that you may want to look at.)

http://anausa.org/forum/index.php?topic=10932.0

Todd gives some terrific suggestions and others have chimed in with their thoughts as well. It may be a good starting point.

Please let Edin know I am cheering him on... and hope you are taking time for yourself too.

Hang in there.
